Oh I have no idea about Monroe, but Oxford sure as heck does! Sandy Hook too...I know because I'm related to them. LOL

Am not really a big fan of American history between 1800 and 1900. It's really the most boring phase in American history. The dudes looked scary and hairy. And there were no tight corset porting wenches (Yum!) like in European history. Bummer.

Monroe has hicks and wanna be hicks. There is a section of Monroe in Stevenson that is very run down, a place that most people who have ever been in Monroe wouldn't think would be in their town.

You can go from Million dollar houses to shacks in a matter of seconds.

I've also talked to people who grew up in Monroe 20-30 years ago. The Easton kids used to talk about how backwards Monroe was. Now, in Monroe we think Easton is in the middle of nowhere. Although Easton is exceptionally wealthy today, many people look at is as being in the middle of nowhere and full of farms and tractors. Well, 20-30 years ago it was the opposite. That's what people in Easton thought of Monroe, NOTHING.

I think it's a stretch to assume anyone living in an older area is a hick. You are probably referring to the Cottage St. area, which is a very old road in town with some older, small cottages. The Stevenson Post Office is also located there in a little area of old buildings. Cottage st. runs alongside a railroad track. It is true that there are large colonials as well as cottages there. I think you might be exaggerating the general area a bit, though. In fact, due to it's proximity to Webb Mountain Park, a lot of people consider that area of Monroe desirable, despite the little "run down" houses.

There is another historic area of Monroe that looks a bit tired and dated, in the Stepney area. I think it's called Maple St., off Rt. 25. There is one old house that almost hangs over into the road, I think it might be a multi-family house now. In that area there is an old railroad station. It's an interesting little area.

It's an old Victorian on Maple Street, that house could be AMAZING if someone were to build it up right.

As for as Cottage Street. It could get a little depresing. I know Monroe doesn't have a lot of waterfront real estate, but in my mind it is close enough to Lake Zoar at the Housatonic River that Cottage Street and other areas should be a lot more desirable. I think it has alot to do with some of these run down cottages that Monroe hasn't seen an influx of wealthier residents in that area.

Who knows though. The Stevenson area is looking to revitalize, 34 is getting more commercialized and the old Stevenson Lumber factory is looking for tenants. I think 34 in Monroe should steer clear of what 111 and 25 has become. It's to close to water for that. What the Waterview did was amazing. Great use of that piece of property.

I'm not sure what Stevenson will become.

Just imagine if the "recycling" facility had been approved for the old Stevenson lumber property.

Can't believe they were even thinking of that.

30 years ago you could have still described Monroe as "sleepy". 20 years ago? Not really. Probably around the mid-80's was when Monroe really started to change.

I've never seen one on any vehicle but a beat-up pickup truck or hanging from the second story window of some run down rental.

No, They are Chinese Geely Motors owned Volvo affiliated.
