There are many interesting places to walk around. West Hartford has one of the best small downtown in the Hartford region. Greenwich has a very interestin upscale downtown too. Both Fairfield and Westport do too. I know this is not exactly what you are looking for but I thought I would throw them out.

Another option is Northampton, Massachusetts which is not far. The others mentioned are great too. Jay

Seconding Litchfield and Kent + Canaan (Falls Village). They each have very small, adorable downtown areas but you'd need a car or bike to get to various retail locations. Litchfield County is known for its abundance of antique stores. Antiques Dealers of Litchfield County, CT

I would recommend Putnam. Northeast Connecticut has some sleepy little towns with very nice antique shops and specialty shops. You might have to drive around a bit though. The Quiet Corner, as this part of CT is called, has some very nice old towns.

IMO, this is the least attractive area in Litchfield County. I prefer Kent, Salisbury, Litchfield and Lakeville. Even New Hartford. Of course this is just my opinion.
