Hi...I am planning on moving to New Haven, CT in the next month, relocating from the South. I have a budget of about $1000/mth for rent (could possibly stretch it up a couple hundred, but not much more). Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the best areas to live in around New Haven. My fiance is moving with me and is not a big cities, so we are looking for a neighborhood with a little more of a smaller town feel (as in, we just don't want to live in downtown New Haven. We had lunch on Wooster St. and really liked the feel of that area). So far I have gotten a lot of suggestions for Westville, East Rock, North Haven, Branford, and Milford. Just wondering if there are more areas out there we could look at, since I know 1000/mth is a tight budget for a 1-bedroom apartment in New Haven.

We would like an area with little shops, eateries, grocery stores (preferably within walking distance). I also love to exercise outside so would really like a place I feel safe running or biking around by myself at most hours of the day. I realize not everywhere is a place you can run outside at 5 AM (which is the kind of place we live now), but a place that would feel secure would be nice. Also would be nice to be close to a train station. Not really into the party scene...just a nice place that feels homey Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

1 bedroom? $1000/month is tough in New Haven to get in a safe neighborhood with a decent place.

North Haven, Branford and Milford are all 15 minutes or so from downtown New Haven. They are all fine towns, but it will be a challenge to get something at that price. Milford has the nicest walkable downtown and would probably fit your needs, but again - $1000 is a really tough price point. $1200 would get you a place in Milford, a friend of mine rents a decent place near downtown for that amount. They also have a brand new boardwalk by the water that's really nice for running/walking at Silver Sands State Park. Milford also has the best train station of the 3 towns, as it's on the main New Haven line and is an 80 minute ride to NYC, 35-40 minutes to Stamford and 15 minutes to New Haven.

You might want to check West Haven. It is a middle class town and has a lot of nice neighborhoods. It also has a great waterfront walk that you could use for running and biking. The only problem with West Haven is its schools are not great but I don't think you care about that. Jay

Default Thanks!

Thank you for merging the threads Jay! I wasn't sure how to do it You are right, since I don't have kids I don't care about schools as much...just more safety, and a smaller town feel. I will definitely check out West Haven, as well as Branford, Milford, and North Haven. Thanks you guys!

Out of curiosity, are there specific areas in these cities you might suggest to live in? I'm not sure how specific anyone can get, but that makes searching from a distance a little easier (as we really will only have two days to find a place upon getting there).

Hamden is directly north of New Haven and offers easy access to the city. Most of the town is safe.

LOL. I'm kind of surprised that you beat me to it on that suggestion.

Keep in mind that North Haven isn't very walkable and Branford has a small downtown.
