How is the area of Poplar Street in Bridgeport? I was told it's in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport!
Is it a SAFE street for a young single female to live?

I have a relative who is looking in that area, but she is concerned about safety.

Poplar Street is NOT Black Rock. Black Rock is south of the New Haven line tracks. I do not consider this the best of areas anymore. My family use to live there and they moved out a long time ago when things started getting dicey. Jay

It hasn't been the best of areas during my lifetime.

Okay. Is black rock the only area you would consider living in? What about just north of Beardsley Park?

Problem is my relative is looking for a room to rent in a condo/apt etc with only a budget of 500 or less a month. She is working in Fairfield and has exhausted Craigslist so far. The only town with rental/shares in her budget are in Bridgeport.

Ah, Craigslist.

"Apartment is located on Poplar St. in Bridgeport CT located in the Black Rock Section(nope) of Bridgeport Fairfield Ave area. The apartment is in the nicer area." Nicer compared to what? Beirut?

There are many crappy areas. But there are also plenty of good areas. I'm local and i'd consider myself well qualified to tell you/her how a certain street is. Feel free to DM me to ask about individual streets as your relative is searching.

the above person is correct poplar street is not in black rock and is NOT a safe neighborhood - poplar street runs from dewey street (mountain grove cemetary) all the way into an area called the hollow - that whole area is NOT safe let alone for a single female - forget craigs list pick up the connecticut post on sunday and look under rooms for rent - also try the local free newspapers that are put out here and there - also message boards in grocery stores - also not all of black rock is a good area - the closer to the fairfield town line the better the neighborhoods are - i dont know the name of the landlord but there was a very tall building on churchill or roanoke which is just over the bridgeport line in fairfield - i had a friend rent an aparment there many years ago and it was the most reasonable place she could find - the outside then had cedar shakes but they may have sided it or something - you really cant miss it its 6 stories high - if she can find that building im sure someone would give her the name of the landlord to see if anything is available - also if you have any questions about streets and neighborhoods i would be happy to answer them - i lived and worked in bridgeport for many many years

The above poster (PJ1252) is incorrect. While Poplar street is not in Black Rock (it's in the West End), it is about a mile away from the Hollow. The Hollow being not really a neighbourhood you just happen to wander into.

I live a few blocks from the West End currently. That part of the West End is ok. Not great though not too bad, actually one of the safer areas just not very pretty for many of the residences.

OP,

For the price, the West End isn't a super duper great deal. There are some stores to walk to but largely just a residential area. Chances are you can find something a tad more expensive west of Ellsworth St in Black Rock which is much nicer. Other areas to look in are Treeland, Whiskey Hill, North End, the Toilsome Hill area off of Brooklawn Ave, upper Madison, and even Downtown has nice apartments (though the personal comfort factor is big there). Try to stay away from East Side, East End, Hollow. Toss up on a case by case basis: South End.

Best of luck to your relative.
