Hi all. 2 follow-up questions on Trumbull:

1. Is it 'supposed' to be as expensive as say Fairfield? I'm finding that a lot of the houses I'm interested in (4 bed/2.5 bath) are listed in the upper $500s (or over $600k), but still need a lot of work. I feel like if I'm going to spend in the mid-to-upper $500s in Trumbull that the house better be near perfect/fully updated. Am I wrong in thinking this about Trumbull? It's a great place but seems pricier than I was hoping/thinking. Anything that's upper $400s/low $500s turns out to be a weird property or on a main road.

2. Within a 20-minute radius of Trumbull, what's the best location(s) to find a lot of big box stores? i.e. are there any newish shopping centers that have a Best Buy, Michaels, Kohls, etc...

Thanks.

I feel that in Trumbull, you can get a nice, updated house in that price range, but it can generally just be difficult to find 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Older communities just aren't as likely to have that layout unless it's in a brand new neighborhood, which then will cost a lot more. Sometimes you can find houses that technically only have 3 bedrooms, but there's a 4th room without a closet that could be used as one.

1. Trumbull is pretty pricey, largely due to many homes having more land in general. If you're looking for a 500k home that's completely updated, you're going to have to look into Shelton, Monroe or Oxford.

2. Milford is close and has pretty much any shopping you'd need. Trumbull has all necessities as well.

There's a Best Buy, Kohls, and Target at Hawley Lane (that's on the border with Stratford -- you take Nichols south and it's just past the Rt 8 entrances.

Thanks everyone. Regarding Monroe, how do the schools compare to Trumbull (I'm sure it's been asked in other topics but figured I'd ask again...). Also, how does Monroe compare in general to Trumbull? I do see a lot more in the $500 to $550k range that are fantastic looking homes. Is there less to do on Monroe than Trumbull, or is it close enough to Trumbull that you can just go there anyway? And I assume the Trumbull mall is the one I'd go to?

Thanks again.

Yeah, Trumbull isn't quite as expensive in Fairfield, but for what you want - it's going to be tough.

Just careful with Monroe taxes. They're on the high side, and I believe there's a quarterly tax in addition, but don't quote me on that. Shelton and Milford have much lower taxes on homes (Shelton because of a low mill rate, Milford due to how they assess property) and are good towns to live in. Orange is another town to consider in the area that has great schools and is more affordable than Trumbull. If you can go further north, consider Newtown, Oxford or Brookfield.

Trumbull is not nearly as expensive as Fairfield. For $500,000 in Fairfield you will get an even more modest home that needs updating. The pricing all has to do with location. Fairfield is that much closer to major employment centers so people are willing to pay more for homes there. Same can be said for Monroe verse Trumbull.

As for major shopping, trumbull has the mall with most major mall type store. There are a coulple of big box stores at Hawley Lane but there is just not enough land in one spot to build a big group fo them. As noted you will have to drive to Milford/Orange to find them all together. Jay

Thanks. We both work from home, hence we can go a bit farther north and east (though we don't want to go too far from NYC area and Trumbull really seems to fit everything we want, minus it being a little pricier than we thought for what we're looking for).

Are any of the following similar to Trumbull in terms of types of neighborhoods, demographics, etc..., but they're simply farther away and therefore less expensive?

Monroe
Orange
Shelton
Milford

Thanks.

You'll find similar neighborhoods in all of those towns, but the towns as a whole have their differences. What exactly do you like?

In terms of most to least expensive, I'd say the following:

Orange
Milford
Monroe
Shelton

That's really splitting hairs though because they're all similar. I'd say the closest to Trumbull in terms of demographics would be Orange.
