Top of the heap... again, with NY and NJ following close behind. Just once, I'd like to see CT lose this contest.

5 highest, 5 lowest states for taxes - cost of living - MSN Money

==Quote==

Highest No. 1: Connecticut

Income tax: 5%
Sales tax: 6.35%
Property tax per capita: $2,381
Inheritance tax: 7.2% to 16% with $2 million exemption

High taxes in Connecticut are paired with the nation's highest income per capita -- $56,001 per person in 2010, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

A sales tax increase took effect in July, raising the rate from 6% to 6.35% and adding a further 3 percentage point levy on luxury goods such as expensive cars and boats. The state collects the third-highest property taxes per capita and is one of 14 states to tax Social Security income, according to CCH.

NY state keeps NY's average down. NYC has the worst taxes ever.

CT ain't far behind, though.

Do we really have to go through this again???

I do not understand how they determine this. Our income tax rate is the lowest of the 5. Our sales tax is lower than New Jersey's, is only marginally higher than Massachusetts and we do not allow local sales tax on top of the state tax like New York does.

Our property tax per capita is lower than New Jersey and we do not have any county taxes which the others have. Also we do not have the large rural areas that New York, Maryland and Massachusetts have that offsets the per capita property tax for the entire state. Ask almost any former New Yorker who has higher property taxes and most will agree New York is higher than Connecticut by far.

It is also not clear how they determine the inheritance tax comparison but our top rate is no higher than Massachusetts or New York. It would be more appripriate to compare when the inheritance tax kicks in and what that rate is than just comparing the rates.

I am not saying we are not a high tax state but I do not see how we can be called the highest. Jay

A few counties, maybe. But the state as a whole? No.

We also have the highest gas taxes.

States with the highest gas taxes - fuel prices - MSN Money

I agree on property tax. Most of NY is reasonable. Westchester and New York counties are the very high ones, worse than most towns/cities in CT.

NYS prop taxes are MUCH higher than some towns in CT. Check out the taxes on a 1MM home in Rye vs across the street in Greenwich.

We do have the highest gas tax but we do not have any tolls on our roads. Try driving around any of the other states mentioned avoiding tolls. It just about can't be done. And they do not take that into account in theat article either. Jay

True, but you make it sound like every state out there has tolls on every on and off ramp. That's not the case for even the majority of them. I usually don't believe these lists (especially Forbes) but when numerous sources find the same results month after month and year after year, it's difficult to downplay it. I don't mean to come off as rude but you really need to get out of the Connecticut area and experience another place with an open mind. You'll quickly notice the negatives here, but at the same time, you'll appreciate the positives even more. It is what it is.

Why try to figure out who exactly is the highest, does it really matter, why not make an effort to not even be one of the highest? We can split hairs between MA, NY, CT & Jersey if we just want something to talk about. But personally I'd rather not be associated with the highest taxed group at all. Its not like we actually get anything here thats not provided in the other states, other than moving more money around, which dont mean much if it only feeds a fat state govt. Nobody mentioned car taxes either, we get to pay property tax on vehicles on top of gas tax & sales tax. Trying to justify our crooks by saying somebody elses crooks are worse is kinda funny, if it didn't cost so damn much....
