Costco has a very limited selection of items, you have to buy larger quantities and you pay to join. Whole Foods is pricier than Stop & Shop for just about everything. Shoprite is cheaper but I find their stores to be poorly maintained. IGA is also pricier. I can't speak about Beachside but since it is a local market I would guess it is not cheaper. Jay

I always felt the Shelton S&S was head and shoulders above the Stratford S&S. Although when Big Y came into Stratford, I don't think I set foot in the Shelton S&S again.

I found the Shelton location to always have the absolutely most disgusting meat cases of any supermarket anywhere in this area. The rest of the store, just fair overall. Still, both(Shelton/Stratford S&S's) are turds. IMHO.

I'm with Jay: I actually like Stop & Shop. I do the bulk of my shopping at the Port Chester, NY Super S&S because the branded items I buy are usually on sale (I stock up when they are) and they have whatever I'm looking for. I buy produce at Whole Foods & don't buy meat at all. If I need something quick, I go to the W. Putnam Ave. Greenwich S&S. My husband prefers the Stamford S&S near the Greenwich line (which is almost an exact replica of the NY store) but it is a little more expensive than Port Chester. When you're looking at shelf stable foods vs. the other major sellers in lower Fairfield County (Fairway, A&P Fresh) Stop & Shop wins on price hands down and also has better lighting than the other stores.

Maybe it's just the FFC S&S's that are bad, I've yet to find one with decent produce. I just feel icky in their stores, some even smell bad.

I have been to the two in Fairfield, the ones in Black Rock, Trumbull, Monroe, Norwalk and Westport and would not call them "icky" by any stretch of the imagination. JMHO, Jay

I used to at the store on Mill Plain Road for a couple of summers when I was in high school and college, and it was a terrible place to work. I get very little of my grocery's there.
