Military family relocating to New London Sub base. Looking for some info as far as places to rent in the area. Trying to budget around 1000$ not sure if possible but it is our goal. We were preferring the New London area seems like the schools are a bit better on that side of the water. Have one child in kindergarten. Mostly looking for safe area for wife while being deploy. Coming from Colorado so we know a thing or two about weather n whatnot but one question we do have is oil. How does that factor as far as a cost standpoint when it comes to being included in monthly costs. We have central air here so thats something completely new to us. Thanks for any help and suggestions in advance. Appreciate your time.

Welcome to Connecticut. Your housing budget is going to be very difficult for a two bedroom. It's the very bottom of rentals in the area. You might do better if you go to $ 1200- 1500.

What are you looking to rent ? Only Groton has apartment complexes ( i.e., large buildings with numerous units. plus maybe a pool or other amenities) The desirable towns in the area will have a small variety of condominiums, 2 family homes and some single family homes to rent.

The best school districts in the area would be considered to be Old Lyme & East Lyme ( including the village of Niantic.) However, Waterford & Stonington also have good schools systems.

Stay out of the city of New London itself . I would go to any of the various real estate websites, such as zillow.com, realtor. com, trulia., com etc. and input your desired info and see what comes up.

You're not likely to find central air unless you rent a newer condo or decide to rent in Groton itself in a newer apartment complex. Elsewhere you may have to ask if you can put in window units of your own. Oil heat can expensive. If you rent a townhouse type condo, you would normally pay your own heat on top of rent. In an apartment type condo, heat is included in rent.

Please check in with the sub base itself. They have a houisng office and will usually have leads on places to rent off base.

Virtually anywhere in the area is safe, except for the city of New London. New London has very under performing schools and some very sketchy areas, so you wouldn't want to live there anyway. Even Groton for personal safety is fine should you wind up there.

Welcome to Connecticut. Willow Wind, as usual, has some good advice on the area.

New London is the only town I'd stay away from. Groton schools are decent in terms of test scores, but I've known a few people that moved out of town because they were not happy with the schools. Norwich has some decent residential areas and the high school is pretty good, but the elementary schools are so-so.

Ledyard & Montville have decent school systems as well, but some might not like living so close to the casinos.

You may be able to find something in East Lyme/Niantic for close to $1,000, but it would likely be fairly small.

No idea? Population wise, New London is about 1/3 of New Britain and 1/4 of Waterbury. All three have a lot of room to improve.
