You could also look at Bethel and New Milford. Bethel is only slightly more expensive than Danbury overall, and New Milford is arguably cheaper. Both are reasonable commutes to Somers.

If you can afford it I'd pick Bethel over New Milford. The commute is noticably faster especially since they've built the highway portion of 7/202, but New Milford is a still pretty far up.

This. I dated a girl on South St and it was just as you explained it: so-so. Not dangerous at all, but just a little trashy.

Pretty much, in Danbury, there are 3 areas to stay away from:
  1. The area in the middle of Triangle Street, Main Street and White Street.
  2. The area between Franklin Street, Main Street, Rose Hill and West St.
  3. The Mill Ridge Condo Complex off of Lake Ave
The rest is very safe and actually is pretty nice.
