Daughter moving to CT to attend Yale Medical School for Post-doc. Where are the safe areas within a 15 mile radius? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are many safe places near Yale Medical that your daughter could live. We would need to know a few things though like her budget for rent, what she expects to get for that amount and if she will have a car. If she wants a more urban area downtown New Haven is very safe and a great place for youg people to live. East Rock is a beautiful somewhat quieter area in NH where a lot of Yalies live. Also Westville can be nice as well.

In the suburbs, Milford, Branford and guilford are very nice though they are more family oriented communities. Hamden is a nice town with a lot of rentals but there are a couple of areas that could be a problem. Even most of East Haven and West Haven are nice. Like I said there is a lot to choose so we would need more information to narrow it down. Jay

Where are you from? How safe you want it depends on how safe it is around where your daughter and you are living now.

Theres a few towns that could be covered within a 15 mile radius. These towns offer just about every living situation possible. It all depends on what you want. Basically what Jay said.

What is your daughter looking for in a place to live? A roommate move in? a studio, a warehouse, a house, an apartment, does she plan on having a car or bicycle?

Theres always ads on Craigslist for roommates. This is pretty common as students that go to surrounding schools will rent out a house and 3-5 people will live there. Its not bad like frat house bad, a lot of these people are young professionals too and keep it clean and quiet.

You're better off asking where the unsafe areas are, as the vast majority of neighborhoods in a 15 mile radius are very safe. In New Haven, look into downtown, East Rock and Westville.

Most everyone has made good suggestions. There are far more safe places to live than dangerous.

In New Haven proper, Wooster Square, Westville, downtown and East Rock are safe.

Within 15 miles you can look into Branford, Milford, North Haven, Wallingford, Orange, Guilford, etc. Towns like Hamden, West Haven, and East Haven have some trouble spots but the vast majority of areas are safe. These towns all offer something different, so a lot depends on what she likes and her budget.

Not sure if she will need access to the West Campus at all, but that's located in Orange/West Haven and the surrounding area is very safe.

While parts of New Haven can be dangerous (more so at night), there are tons of safe places that are safe and are within that range. You could pretty much pick any town around New Haven, and it would be fine. If safety is an extremely large concern, you could just take a blanket approach and avoid New Haven and the immediate vicinity (although I want to stress that there are safe parts in those areas), but you could then easily pick any other town surrounding them on the map. Branford, Guilford, Monroe, Orange, Shelton, Ansonia- all are wonderful towns.
