Burlington and Canton you probably get more house for the money and they are great communities too. I attend Valley and can tell you it is a great church, lots of activities for the kiddos, lots of families, sounds like the area you are looking for. If you are considering Glastonbury or South Windsor, I know of another church in the area, located in East Hartord. I have a friend who goes there and I have been there to their Christmas Production. It is also a nice church, with lots of activities, but closer to Glastonbury.
These are nice communities, and may be nice churches, but the commute to UCONN is not nearly within the OP's desire of 20 minutes. Perhaps the OP might consider these churches and still live closer to UCONN. They really have to be East of the River to get anywhere near the commute they're looking for.

What about Hebron? It's a little further out towards UConn than Marlborough--and probably cheaper too.

Yes, anything west of Hartford is going to be at least 30 minutes to get to UConn. UConn is a haul out to Exit 68 on 84, and then another 10 minutes or so down 195 into Storrs, or else you're going up 384 to 44 to 195. Neither will be less than 30 minutes on a good day.

There is a decently strong natural parenting community in greater Hartford. Manchester Memorial is known for being natural-birth friendly and Middlesex Hospital in Middletown sponsors some moms groups as well.

With a little research, it seems Tolland would be a nice fit, possibly Colchester, Mansfield, Coventry, Ellington? Any inside info on those towns?

One thing I didn't mention is that the community we're involved in is directly related to hubby's potential position. Meaning, we do not need to be super duper far from UCONN and surrounding communities because we will need to be VISIBLE in the community

You mean you need to be visible in a community close to UConn in Storrs?

Tolland would definitely work then.

Tolland is a very nice town. Very woodsy with spread out houses. I think you'll like it.
