Based on your experiences what would you say is the best public high school in New Haven - the city and not the county. Why? What makes it the best in your opinion?

Not including the magnet schools? Wilbur Cross. It's in a nice neighborhood in a beautiful part of the city and performs the best, probably because it pulls from a less impoverished area than the others.

New Haven also has some smaller specialized high schools that do better than the regular public high schools. These include the Cooperative School, the High School in the Community, Metropolitan Business High School and New Haven Academy. These are smaller schools with only a few hundred students and they perform better than the regular high schools. This is likely because they draw the better students from those schools. Still these schools do not appear to approach the Connecticut Academic Performance Tests results of high schools in most of the suburbs. I believe I read that New Haven Academy has a 100% rate of students going on to higher education. I do not know much more about these schools but I am sure you could research them easily enough. Jay

Thanks for the suggestions. We are deciding whether to stay in NH or move out of the city and if we stay the magnet schools seem like the way to go.

New Haven schools tend to not be all that great. And you go to whichever school serves the area you live in. Also, you can't just decide to send your kid to a magnet school. It's a lottery-based system. See here for info:
