I have no problem with people wanting to come to America and become a citizen, but it must be done the legal way so this way all these people can have background checks done and file all paperwork needed. If I, an American legal citizen need ID for everything, need to have background checks done to obtain a firearm, and pay taxes for people on state aid , then illegals in this country need to do it the right way, like how this country has rules and laws. It blows my mind that we have people running this country, making choices for our state and nation that are saying its okay to break laws.

This is a big slap in the face to all of our grandfathers and their fathers and mothers that came to this country as an immigrant and did it the right way. What about all the people working so hard that have been trying for so long to obtain legal documentation ? This country has lost its mind with all the politicians as well.

"Mayor Pedro Segarra introduced a program that would allow immigrants who are in the country illegally, those who are homeless and even those just released from prison to legally obtain identification."

Maybe Pedro should bring these people into his house and live with his family.

Whatever happened in the past is irrelevant. We have problems of TODAY that need to be addressed with a TODAY solution.

So you advocate going after the employers with a heavy hand then? The way to extinguish illegal immigration and get immigrants to work more within the system is to eliminate the demand for their labor.

Let's go after those that employ illegal residents and make that the centerpoint of the effort! That makes much more sense than chasing 12 million illegals around. If you knowingly employ illegal immigrants, you go to jail.

How's that sound?

The real problem is that the business that benefit directly or indirectly from illegal immigration covertly support the continued problem. Let's send some Monsanto executives to jail and some farmers and butcheries that employee them directly and see if they decide to look for American employees instead.

Thoughts?

I've been saying for years if the US really wants to get tough on immigration reform, they need to look at US slaughterhouses. Since the early '80s that industry has been dominated by immigrants, many of whom are illegals. After executives broke their union contracts with their workers, they would often replace the staff with newly arrived residents who have been paid as much as 40% less and are easier to micro-manage without union stewards. The government has known about this for decades and has done nothing about it. Only once, back in 2005, did they address this when they raided a Swift plant in the Great Plains.

Right.

Follow the dinero.

This is exactly what creates demand for illegals, but, the very same people often who are so virulently against illegal immigration give a pass to these companies who provide jobs for them. Cause these are real 'Mericans who are employing these illegals.

Agreed but we already have that in place so why isn't anything going on with it ? I know that immigration does random checks on businesses.

Connecticut/Hartford is one of the most illegal alien friendly places in the entire nation. They get ID cards, reduced tuition and driver's licenses!
It sounds like you are happy about this.

I believe it is the noble thing for the city to do. Why should all these illegal people be left in the shadows? They can't even be deported that way, because they can't be identified. Now, if they were told to come out of the shadows so that they can be deported, NONE of them would do it anyway. So the conservative fantasy of deportation is just that.....a fantasy. Illegal aliens will either exist (a) in the shadows and remain here or (b) out of the shadows and on the path to citizenship. It's impossible to create a program that identifies illegal aliens and has them deported, because none of them would come out of the shadows anyway.

Now, ONE thing that we can and should do is SECURE the borders to reduce and prevent illegal immigration. But it's not getting done, for partisan political reasons.

They want ID cards so they can get Medicaid and the EITC up to $24,000. Illegals are going to get government benefits at the taxpayers expense. Duh.
