Hi everyone,
My family and I are moving to West Simsbury in a few weeks from NC and although I know the public schools are excellent, we are also considering catholic school. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with the catholic schools in the area? I know there is a Catholic school (St.Mary's) in Simsbury. Thanks so much!!

Simsbury public schools are outstanding.

Northwest Catholic HS in West Hartford has an excellent reputation - 99% of graduates go on to 4 year colleges, I believe.

There are also private, non-religious schools that are excellent as well - Ethel Walker in Simsbury and Miss Porter's in Farmington for girls, Avon Old Farms for boys.

As a graduate of NWC in the last decade I feel the need to say that it looks good from the outside, but it's not so pretty once you cut into it.

In 2005 their band teacher was arrested, charged and convicted of having sex with a 17 yr old student. The way the school handled this in the beginning was disgusting, worrying more about their reputation than the sexual assault.

A few years later their lacrosse coach and English teacher was arrested for running a marijuana grow house in Bloomfield.

So before you set your heart on NWC, look carefully, it's not as wonderful as it looks from the outside.

Are you sure you don't mean ECHS (East Catholic?). I ask because our band teacher was arrested around the very same time for sleeping with a female student. They were both woman ironically enough. The very hush way it was handled was what I'd expect from a private school.

Welcome to Connecticut. The majority of high school students have had some experience with weed or popping pills so I wouldn't call drug busts the sign of anything wrong.

For OP: Another school to consider is St Paul in Bristol. I have no direct experience but they were in the same sports leagues as NWC and ECHS.

Yupp, I mean NWC, I was a student at the time. He's also not the only teacher to have relations with a student. He just got caught.

And I agree you on the most kids part. I actually found the overall student population of NWC to be less materialistic and care far less about money, status etc...
