I found this to be interesting. Hartford rates 5th in the country for retirees. At least it goes beyond the usual low cost of living/low taxes/warm weather ratings most articles go by. What do you think? Jay

I believe it. That is why I am going to make my bet on CT and stay here in retirement. I believe CT is very benevolent to it's seniors with all the various programs. Then add in the property tax relief on a state and local town level I believe it is actually better in some cases than moving down south.

Not buying it. I realize in the eyes of some people here that this is a state that can do no wrong, but in reality the fiscal incompetence at the capitol is going to have long-term, reprehensible effects on most people for years to come, including retirees.

I'm gonna have to look into that. Even if they give me a break on my 9k in property tax for a 1,700 sq ft home, I don't think it can be better than NC where we are looking. Hey, if I wasn't getting beaten up by all the taxes in FFC, and could afford it on my Pension and SS and other investments, I'd stay.....but then again, if I had planned better, and earlier in life............still comparing a .044 mill rate (NC) to a 32.11 mill rate (CT)

I will have to agree with this. There are significant expenses to retiring in CT and once I am eligible, I'll be leaving.

Great place to raise a family. Awful place to retire.

Remember one thing about North Carolina, they tax groceries. Also remember to look carefully at the additional cost you are going to have to spend traveling back to Connecticut if your family is still here. Flights back for holidays are very pricey so prepare yourself for that or not be with your family on the holidays. And don't "expect" your children to come and visit. It is kind of unfair to assume they will want to spend their little vacation time visiting you. As you can tell, I have been through some of this already with family members and the savings is really not as much as people think. You may want to consider moving out of Fairfield County but still stay in Connecticut. Just a thought. Also I am attaching the link to information on tax relief programs for seniors that CTartist had posted elsewhere. It is a great reference for someone considering where to retire to in the state. Jay

I live in Fairfield County too and the taxes are very high but that is only one county. Outside of Fairfield County (like noted in the Hartford area) taxes are drastically different and many towns give their own senior tax relief on top of the state aid.

My mom and dad moved to NC in retirement for about 5 years and came back to CT. I am just curious what area or town in NC will you move?

I know people say they are getting beat up on the taxes but how is CT personally beating you up? I would think it is because (like me and my husband) you are making the good salaries of Fairfield County.

Don't forget the higher taxes we are paying to the state are helping seniors throughout the state. When you move to NC in retirement and you are living on a lower salary and then a spouse is left alone and is living on an even smaller salary. Do you think NC is going to be benevolent towards you? No they can't because the incomes are much lower and the taxes are so low they can't help the seniors & disabled etc. like we can up here in CT.

Think of the big picture.

Actually no, the wealthiest towns in FFC have the lowest taxes…the Hartford area has some of the highest tax rates in the state….

Not that you are personally interested, but other northern states treat retirees much better than Connecticut. Pennsylvania is one example.
