Am looking to get swim lessons for my 8 year old. We've tried various Ys, and private lessons, over the years, but nothing has really worked. He's slowly getting there but not really.

All of his friends (who either have pools or go to camp) can swim.

Where can I send him (aside from a day camp for a few weeks) that'll finally 'kick him into gear' and teach him to swim once and for all?

I'd prefer to not send him someone once a week for 8 weeks... I'd like to just get it done once and for all.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The School of Swimming in Rocky Hill is great but it is far from Trumbull, impossible to get into and its registration period was months ago. I doubt you could get in now even if you were willing to drive that far.

Since you have already tried the Y's and I assume the Y's Lakewood Swim Camp (see below link), you might call around to the various health clubs that have pools and see if they offer private lessons. That may be the only way your child will get the type of instruction you desire. Jay

School of swimming in rocky hill is fantastic and well worth the drive. I love how lessons are every day for 10 lessons. Much more consistent then once a week.

Typically they fill up quickly, however, I've found in the past that the spots for the "older" beginner classes fill slower. Since your child is 8 they would likely qualify for an older kid lower level class.

Thanks all. Rocky Hill does look great but over an hour away. Once/week would be fine to travel, but not everyday... And I really do want something every day.

We do know a ton of people who go to wings over water and really like it. It's expensive but is something we are considering.

A hike from far out Trumbull, but quite a few people in the area are raving about this newer place Swim 70 right on the Westport/Norwalk line just off the Post Rd, including some friends and neighbors in Fairfield. A lot of people are fed up and disenchanted with the lessons at the Y near downtown.
