OK, I live in Rhode Island and like other New Englander's we are not the best drivers. But why are there "no passing on the right" signs on Interstate 95? Shouldn't they have "keep to the right except for passing" signs? Am I suppose to not pass on the right when all lines of traffic are backed up and moving slowly. What, after you left lane, before I go. This is totally screwed up as most states have it the other way. Passing on the right is allowed in Rhode Island if you do it safely. This is important when contending with a road hog who thinks they are driving safely when driving to the left. Do people really get pulled over for passing on the right or is this just a way for Connecticut to incorrectly control the flow of traffic? I thought for all states it was "keep to the right except for passing" instead of favoring the driver who drives incorrectly.

There is no standard sign verbiage for telling drivers that passing on the right is illegal. I am not sure why you think there is. All traffic signs in this country must conform to a publication entitled Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. That manual sets the standards for sign sizes, shapes and colors but for traffic information signs like you ask about there are no standard for what it should say. I am sure the Connecticut Office of State Traffic Administration and CT DOT's Traffic unit looked at this very closely and felt this wording was clearer than other wordings. Jay

This has been answered before on this board, but here it goes again. In CT one can pass on the right if there are 3 or more lanes. So, on a two lane road passing on the right would be illegal. I know some sections of i-95 are only two lanes, but some portions are 3 or more lanes.

Also, contrary to what others think driving the speed limit in the left lane isn't illegal. It may be annoying, but once again it's not illegal.

so in Connecticut they do not have a law that keeps traffic to the right except for passing? If so, they are probably the only state not to have that law. I would think you could do any speed in the left lane as long as you are passing a slower vehicle, but once you pass that vehicle you are obligated to pull to the right if you are no longer passing a vehicle. We have all seen slow moving trucks passing slower moving trucks, but they will pull back into the right lane when it is safe to do so.

Your supposed to move over in CT like most states (not all) In CT they don't really enforce it and I couldn't actually find a fine listed for it. Also it looks like keep right goes out the window with 3 lanes as well.

State "keep right" laws
