The food scene in southern CT is one of the best in the country. We could use more good Mexican, but that's about it, and it can be found if you look for it.

Thoughts on Stratford vs Hamden? I am kind of familiar with the Hamden area, had family that lived there. I like the area where like the kohls, starbucks, food lion (I believe), bobs, etc. that shopping area of Hamden seems to be pretty good. How does the shopping in Stratford compare? Or how do the two places compare overall? Thank you!

Hamden is fine but there's nothing really "special" about it to warrant the extra commute. And if you want to be near New Haven, just rent in East Rock.

I think Stratford is ok. Great brewery. A few good eateries. Paradise Green is a nice area. Shopping is big box, not especially great. I think Milford would be the superior choice but Stratford is a bit cheaper.

It's so easy to go from one area to the next, don't let the shopping be a big factor.
I like the northern part of Stratford but that's it for me. The rest of it does nothing for me. I hope you find a good place!

Hamden seems to be a little cheaper house price wise.

Hamden is nice. There is no food lion there but they have ok shopping. Majority of it is on dixwel ave which where the Kohls and Bob's is at. 15min ride to North haven and you will have other options but for all of your other shopping needs Milford/orange has everything

Maybe a little. Check taxes. Stratford and Hamden are higher than Milford.

I'd personally rather be closer to Fairfield County and the train line for future jobs.

Stratford all the way. Hamden is way the hell out in the middle of nowhere for a job down in Fairfield.
The twin cities Stratford/Milford near the coast and train stations are perfect for jobs in Orange/Fairfield.

"food lion"??? Food Lion is a southeastern US chain owned by Ahold Delhaize who also owns Stop & Shop which is their northeast supermarket chain. Hamden has a large Stop & Shop supermarket store right on Dixwell Avenue (Route 10). It also has a Shoprite, Save-a-Lot and Price-Rite so there are plenty of supermarkets to choose from. No need to travel to other towns unless they have something else you need or want.

Still I agree that Hamden is not as nice as say Milford but that is more personal preference than anything else. Hamden puts the OP further from their job in Fairfield for no really good reason. The OP would be better looking in the Milford/Stratford area for commuting purposes than Hamden IMHO. Jay

It's not a big difference though. North Milford is comparable to Orange.
Milford is not more than Orange. The zillow home value index for Orange as $348,100 with Milford at $276,800. That's a big difference. Even if you go by other metrics like median list or sale price, Orange is higher. It's a more expensive town.

North Milford does have a very similar feel to Orange. I like both towns. On OPs budget she may find something in Milford, but it will be harder to find something livable for that price in Orange.
