I am researching relocating from NYC to CT. I work from home for a NYC based insurance company, so commuting is not a factor. I want to be atleast 2 hours from NYC. I am also looking for an area that is safe, has a good school system, reasonable rental properties (I would prefer a 2-3 bedroom townhouse), and not to far from leisure activities. I have read so many of your posting and replies and I am convinced that you guys are my most valuable source of information.. Thank you in advance!

Is that a 2 hour drive by car or by train?

NYCRN810. Waterbury is about 2.5 hours by train to and from Grand Central Terminal. A stop over and train switch is required in Bridgeport. From New Haven it is about an hour and 45 minutes to and from Grand Central Terminal. Assuming that you don't mind a drive to and from a community near New Haven's rail stations you could easily find a suburban community near the shoreline that should suit you. The Waterbury area could suit you too if you prefer an inland location. What kind of recreational opportunities are you looking for?

EnderW. Durham is a pretty quiet and fairly rural community. I seem to recall the Connecticut State Fair is held there every year. Been a while since I've been there.

Durham is quiet, mostly residential, and doesn't have a whole lot going on. It is a nice town if you are looking for a relaxed place to live. As for the fair, the Durham Fair is held there every year (there is no CT state fair).

Most suburbs in CT will be safe and have good schools, so you certainly have many towns to choose from. Your budget will be the only thing potentially restricting you.

I would consider the towns east of New Haven. Branford has a number of condos that you may be able to rent. It is a beautiful small town with most of the major amenties needed and the schools are very good. There is the Shoreline East train to get you to New Haven and then on to New York. Other towns to consider would be Guilford or Madison, but they are pricier and have less rentals. Jay

I'll second Jay's vote for Branford. I've had relatives there for decades and they really like the place.

Thank you so much for all of your advice. Can you please tell me anything about Hartford County? Any advice about Manchester and Winchester? The recreational activities I would like to have nearby are like movies, parks, etc. I am willing to travel for other activities like plays, concerts, museums, etc..
