Madison went to Bush/Cheney in 2004 while surrounding towns went to Kerry/Edwards, which is at least some small amount of evidence that it is more conservative. I always had the impression growing up in Guilford that Madison was less culturally tied to New Haven and Yale, which also makes sense geographically. Branford and Guilford have a lot of commuters to New Haven (Madison does too, but probably fewer).
I always assumed Madison was a New Haven/Yale commuter town. Where do people work that live there?
As for the beach homes, I guess that could be a mix of wealthy Yale folks and New Yorkers?

There is a sizable population of New Haven commuters, just seemingly fewer than in Branford and Guilford. There are not many "major employers" as you go further east of New Haven, and you see more family businesses and small retail. There are satellite medical centers, outlet malls along I-95, and the towns/schools also employ a good number of people.
You can also get to Middletown pretty easily via Route 77 or 79 to 17.

There are also a handful of Hartford commuters in Madison.

Yeah I just assumed by the affluence that you would have a lot of commuters to major employers
According to CERC, 22% of Branford workers work in New Haven. In Guilford it’s 16% while in Madison it’s 14%. In both Branford and Guilford, New Haven is the No. 1 place that residents work. In Madison, New Haven is No. 2 after Madison itself. Still the difference in percentages between Guilford and Madison is not that much. Jay
