My brother used to work in New Haven while his wife worked in West Hartford and they found Wallingford to be a good compromise. I think that getting through Hartford on 91 in the morning may be a chore although if you go early enough you won't hit the traffic.

The Merritt parkway is only an alternative to the person working in New Haven because it starts in Meriden and turns into the Berlin Turnpike, which with all its lights, is a nightmare to drive on in the morning. I'd honestly rather put up with more traffic on 91 than all the lights on Berlin TPK because they make me go crazy.

The State is currently constructing a commuter rail that will go from New Haven to Hartford all the way to Springfield Mass.

Amtrak currently runs trains on this corridor but the schedule doesn't fit most commuter's schedules.

I might be mistaken, but I think that light rail between New Haven to Springfield is still just under consideration.

I am considering a job in new haven. What time is heavy traffic on the 91 S start in the morning? if i was to be in New haven for 7AM, would i hit traffic?

Nada. Traffic around here is really all relative anyhow. I find it very very easy compared to other metros. I95 into FFC and NYC is another story though.

The problem with I-91 south into New Haven is really the ramp between I-91 SB to I-95 SB. It is only one lane and it backs up for a couple of miles. Depending where you are going in New Haven, you can avoid it by getting off I-91 before I-95 or keeping to the right to access Route 34 or to the left to access I-95 Northbound. Sometimes it will be slow if you are doing this, but for the most part it does move. Depending on the time of year, this problem usually begins around 7:00 AM.

I shoudl also mention that the State does have plans to correct this by adding another lane to the ramp. This is part of the on-going Q-Bridge project that is reconstructing I-95 through New Haven, but the ramp will not be complete for years. Jay

Going up the Berlin Tpk would indeed be nuts.

(And if that road drives you nuts, don't ever move down South...that's all they have! lol)
