OP: The walk from train station to ferry is fine during the day, but I'd be cautious at night, especially later. You could always take an Uber/Lyft if you felt unsafe.
Given round trips, I am assuming at least one trip, station to ferry, would not be during daylight.

Walking it on a weekday at say 10 a.m., I'd see no issue on, but these are college kids, so my hunch is these are non class time trips.

And yes, I'd advise them at Union just shift trains if they started on Shoreline east.

Also, the area QU is in is safe suburbia.

I've known several people that went to that school and all loved it.

Popular spots for students in Hamden nearby are Sleeping Giant (hiking), Playwright (bar). I know a lot of students like Aunt Chilada's for the cheap drinks. There's live music in a few spots in Hamden like Best Video, Cellar on Treadwell, Space Ballroom. But most of the students I knew went to New Haven for nightlife. New Haven is a big college town, so lots of things to do, great nightlife, great food, ton of culture/music/art, lots of opportunities to socialize. It's like a mini Boston, and would be a big differentiator with other colleges that are more isolated. Even though QU is suburban, it has that college town access nearby.

QU even runs free shuttles to New Haven every weekend.

QU also has a free shuttle during breaks to Union Station. No need to go to Wallingford like others posted:

"This shuttle connects students to Union Station in New Haven during university breaks to assist students traveling home by train. Train service from Union Station is provided by Amtrak, Metro-North Railroad and Shore Line East."

As said, Quinnipiac is a great neighborhood, in the shadow of Sleeping Giant. My cousin graduated from there a few years ago and is now an engineer with EB. The only downside is getting there from Long Island is a PITA. I wouldn't worry about the safety of the trip at all, but if you are thinking about making the trip home regularly on weekends, as opposed to 1-2 times per semester, you might want to look at other choices. It boils down to personal preference I get annoyed having to wait for multiple connections and timing it all out.

It's about $30/trip each way on an uber and probably the most straight forward

Going anywhere on the mainland from Long Island is a pain. It goes with living there and most Long Islanders just accept it. Jay

What are some of the streets, etc, that I could look up this college town vibe area?

True, but driving isn’t such a big deal. Driving to LI is usually annoying. Trying to muck around with Ferry to Train to shuttle bus or city bus, that’s extra.
