I’m not sure what or where you’ve done your research but Connecticut is ranked No. 5 for healthcare by US News & World Reports. We also rank No. 3 for health. You can’t get these high rankings if the hospitals are “rated terrible”.

According to US News, Fairfield County’s hospital rank well. Greenwich Hospital ranks High Performing in 1 Specalty and 4 Procedures/Conditions; Stamford Hospital ranks High Performing in 2 specialties and 4 Procedures/Conditions; Norwalk Hospital ranks High Performing in 3 Procedures/Conditions; Danbury Hospital ranks High Performing in 5 Procedures/Conditions; Bridgeport Hospital ranks High Performing in 7 Procedures/Conditions; and St. Vincent’s Hospital ranks High Performing in 5 Procedures/Conditions. That’s very good.

You do seem to have a thing about medical care in Connecticut. There was a claim that Danbury Hospital had changed significantly for the worse. Most other posters felt that this was not true.

Also I remember your experience with urgent care in Mystic and as I remember there’s more to the story than bad service. You went to a walk-in medical clinic where they told you they couldn't help you there and referred you to a better equipped facility nearby. It was not a medical emergency and you instead checked out of your hotel and drove all the way home. Maybe if you did what they had recommended you’d have a more reasonable and unbiased opinion of healthcare in our state. Jay

Only on Connecticut City Data forums does a topic about a 25 year old considering Manhattan or FFC turn into complex discussions about hospitals in Mystic area. LOL

You are right. Please return to the topic of the OP which is where a 25 year old should live for a job in Greenwich. JayCT, Moderator

Your son (and his girlfriend if she chooses) could live in NYC, Greenwich or Stamford. I am just quickly looking at apartments on Apartments(dot)com.

In NYC I see over 3000 apartments in NYC max of $4000. I see over 4700 apartments max of $5000. There are lots of options in NYC.

I didn't realize your son had a girlfriend, so he is not totally single. They could have a real adventure and live in NYC.

He (or they) could also get a house in Stamford with a yard for the dog. They could live in downtown Stamford in an apartment. They could take an express train into Manhattan when they choose too.

This house in Stamford is right near Cove Beach and the park for $4500. It's awesome and the dog would love it. After I got married I lived down near the Stamford beaches and I would go running down Cove Island Park. There is a running path and "the circle" is just shy of a mile. I also went to Pratt in Manhattan when I lived in Stamford. When I was young (around your son's age) that commute into Manhattan was no problem at all.

So it appears you can only get an apartment in Greenwich but why pay for a smaller place when you don't need the school system.

The Stop and Shop in Greenwich is not far from the train station. I bet your son's company has a shuttle to the train station. Your son could live in downtown Stamford, probably take the train to his job and NYC too. There is Mill River Park near downtown Stamford and it has a dog park. I heard there was going to be improvements in this park and I am reading it on this page for a bigger dog park.
https://millriverpark.org/dogpark (dog park)

There is a thread for Stamford Development, and you can get a lot of info from the people on it. There is a very knowledgeable poster (AntoniaR) on there that is a wealth of information.

Your son has so many options. Good for him.

Ok, dare I ask the obvious?

Why spend 4k/mo on rent when you can spend 4k/mo on a mortgage?

Down payment, other costs, maintenance, wants flex to explore new area before committing?

If it was like 2017 where you could just point to a house and say “I want that one” and easily get it, that would also be one thing, but now, unless you have a huge down payment and can be the most attractive offer, it takes a while vs renting is apply/sign/move in pretty quickly

Even if renting for one year that’s likely a better move for this type of situation to learn area first

He's 25 and looking to see what is the right area. You will not figure that out by simply buying a home. In addition, if once discovered that an area isn't what they were looking (too much traffic, etc), unlike ending a renting contract which tends to be for a short time, selling a home could take much longer. A person needs to rent at least for a few months to see if the area is a good fit for the lifestyle they are aiming to acheive.

I also doubt most of the people seen here have mortgages instead of rents. They seem to be within his age group or slightly below and above. At least to me they seem to be 20-somethings, maybe early 30's in some cases.

That’s right BW. Couldn’t think of a worst time to be a first time buyer than right now. You’ll be hard pressed to do so. Low inventory, higher rates and inflated prices. What could go wrong?
You could also just point and say I want to rent that house or Apt back then too.
Good luck with finding a good rental too now that won’t have multiple applications.

OP the parent.
Will you be funding your sons home purchase or 20% down payment?
Riffwrath was suggesting they pay mortgage instead of rent

Cut out the stressful driving by doing that.

To be fair, so does White Plains. But I'll agree Stamford has more such trains more often.

While I agree with the renting over buying, renting has initial costs too such as security deposits, brokers fees if they go that route, etc.
