Willimantic is a census-designated place and city located in the town of Windham, Connecticut in Windham County. The population was estimated at 16,506 in 2005 and 15,823 at the 2000 census. It is home to Eastern Connecticut State University, as well as the Windham Textile and History Museum. The city was incorporated in 1893 as a section of the town of Windham. The city government was dissolved in 1983 with the area reverting back to the town. It is also the birthplace of U.S Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut.

Willimantic lies about 28 miles SE of Hartford, the state capital (metro population 1.3 million) The University of CT is close by (8.5 miles to the north) The 'town' is in eastern CT- the most rural and least populated part of the state of CT. The Connecticut shoreline lies just to the south about 27 miles. Norwich, population 36,000 is the nearest largest town, nearby- 15 miles to the southeast. Providence Rhode Island is about 44 miles to the northeast. Boston lies about 85 miles to the northeast.

Willimantic itself is an old mill town, that has had some crime issues, mostly regarding drugs. In recent years the town has seen a renaissance as an artists mecca. The surrounding area is rural, mostly wooded, with some farms, state parks, orchards and vineyards.

skytrekker is right on the drug thing... there was a 60 minutes II story on the heroin problem there... Heroin Town, A Drug War In A Small Town - CBS News having said that, there are some really nice towns not too far from there you might consider. the area is very beautiful too and we thought the town was kind of cool with lots of victorian houses and hip places. the food CO-OP is supposed to be awesome too.

I agree that the towns surrounding Willimantic would be a better choice then Willimantic itself.

Possibly a tad cooler in the winter... If you don't want to drag your snowblower all the way from Phoenix then don't worry as we sell them here!

Our foreclosure rate out here is over 65%. The drug crime is worse here because were closer to the border. Some taxe might be cheaper but they get you with something else so it all comes in the wash.

Outside of Willimantic, there are some very pleasant small towns; Columbia, Coventry, Chaplin & Lebanon to name a few. These towns offer a quiet lifestyle with very low crime rates.

You could find a lease in the hill section. Many of the Victorian houses are 2-3 family houses. Don't let that scare you, these houses are sometimes over 4,000SF.

Willimantic isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. Yes, there is a drug problem in town but it is far better than in the 1980's. The town is working hard with local and state police to curb the problem. Violent crime in the city is almost non existent.

IMO Willimantic is a hidden gold mine. If the town continues to curb the drug issues, continues to clean main street and add more retail/housing, the town will be very succesfull in the not to distant future. Right now there is bargains galore in town. The hill section is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Connecticut IMO. This is where you can buy a home built in the late 1800's to early 1900's for under 300k!

Do not live in Willimantic! There are much better surrounding towns to live in without the crime, the garbage, the noise, etc. Schools are horrific there. Gangs, bullies and racism everywhere! Trust me..I lived there for a VERY short period of time. Here are some other places to explore..Lebanon, mansfield, coventry, ashford. Good luck. Personally, I would not move from AZ to CT. But that's my opinion. AZ is supposed to be beautiful..although I've never had the pleasure of knowing.
