Can anyone tell me something about Putnam, CT? Any info would be appreciated (town "vibe", outdoor activities, how rural is it, is it a cute town, etc?)
Thanks!

Putnam is a former mill town in extreme northeastern CT- Massachusetts is to the north via I 395 about 7 miles- Rhode Island just to the east on US 44 about 5 miles. Hartford is to the west about 44 miles. The population after years of decline is growing again- now near 10,000.

The Quinabaug river flows through town, from north to south. Putnam for years was rather downtrodden and depressed, but reinvented itself as a tourist attraction with Antique shops, book stores & boutiques located on a quaint Main street. There are also some coffee & ice cream/bakery shops and a few fine restaurants. The town has some fine examples of colonial and Victorian architecture.

The surrounding area is very pretty; mostly rural with forest covered hills, farms & pastureland, orchards, art venues and the presence of a renowned Prep School (The Pomfret Academy) in nearby Pomfret. The surrounding small towns like Woodstock and Brooklyn are equally as charming.

Providence RI is just to the east by 20 or so miles.

Thanks Jay who is doing a great job as our Moderator here

and also to Juniper for the compliments; by the way I have many relatives from both sides of the family back in the 'burgh' since my parents are both from there.
