Will be looking for an apt/ condo rental in Stamford later this week.
Don't know the area. One of us will work in White Plains, NY, so want to keep commute down by being not too far from I95. Will be commuting by Amtrak on weekends to Eastern CT, so don't want to be too far from train station. Looking for nice safe neighborhood to walk dog, and stay for a few years.
Looking on Craigslist, mention neighborhoods like Shippan, Downtown, Newfield, Glenbrook, Springdale. I have no idea. Any advice? Thanks!

Maybe get in touch with a realtor in the Stamford area to help you. Good luck!

There is an express bus from downtown Stamford to White Plains (the IBus) FYI. Otherwise, it will be useful for you to know that you can park for free on the weekends at any of the train stations EXCEPT Stamford (Glenbrook, etc.) as well as at Government Center, which is about a 5 minute walk to the Stamford train station. So if you're only using the train on weekends and you have a car you might not need to find a place within walking distance of a station.

Can you tell me more about what you are looking for in a neighborhood? I can make some recommendations.
