Not sure what the rules are here as far as posting info. Gees.

Apparently they are 12 miles off the east coast in international waters and are actively patrolling the area for several days now.

U.S. fighter planes intercepted the two Russian fighters in 2008, including one that flew directly over the USS Nimitz twice at an altitude of about 2,000 feet.

I'm moving to the mountains of Danbury. LOL

The Big Russian Bear didn't turn into a cuddly Teddy Bear all of a sudden. Russia would still love to see the US collapse. Old wounds perhaps.

P.S. Don't forget to bring your bugspray to the "mountains".

well, I'm sure we send our subs and planes close to the borders of Russia and China. Remember that reconnaissance plane that was shot down and taken by China in about the first year of the "W" Bush presidency? And the USS Pueblo recon/spy ship off North Korea was captured by them.

At least these subs are seen. Maybe that's their point, to make them visible to the average Joe. A show of strength.

It doesn't mean a thing. Most of their current attack subs were built in the 80s during the Soviet era, and are designed to test enemy sonar defences and fortifications, while conducting exercises to gauge penetrability. Where did you think a Russian sub would do these things? They have prowled these waters for years and have no defensive function. Russian & Ukranian sailors I have met in the past have told me how they would like to get as close as possible, so they could catch FM radio signals on their private receivers!

In the 19 years I spent in the merchant marine, I saw a far greater US Naval presence off foreign shores, than the other way round. One of my clearest memories is still the sight of a periscope coming up between ice floes off Northern Norway, followed by a massive Ohio class nuclear sub (or boomer, as the old sea dogs would call it) surfacing less than 500 yards away. They built quite a few right here in Groton, though the majority have been smaller attack subs. There you go - relevance to the Connecticut forum!

They have been tracking two Akula class (small attack) submarines about 200 miles out. If these submarines were 12 miles out there would a much more significant frenzy, particularly here in Groton; the Sub base would be devoid of subs and full of shore based sailors. As of now, it is essentially business as usual. This looks essentially like the russian military trying to assert that it is still a relevant player in today's global affairs in the face of 6 failed test missile launches since '05 with the most recent being less than a month ago. Russia as a society has been progressing along pretty nicely, however the military is still aching for the good ol' days when they were in charge, and they called the shots. Also put this next to all of the recent situations in western europe, Russia invading Georgia and everyone, especially us, condemning it, as well as the talks of an Eastern European missile defense system that would, in theory, stop Russia from launching any missiles out of the western half of their country; it's not really a shock that the military would try to flex at this point.

As for what this means for us now: not really anything to worry about. If you live in Connecticut, anywhere besides Groton and New London, you have nothing to worry about. If you live in Groton and New London, you already know that you have nothing to worry about. 200 miles off of the coast is significantly closer to us than it is to them, however it is still far from territorial. The Russian war machine does not have the fuel that it used to have back in the cold war era, so not only could they not afford to play chicken with us right now, but they would already be playing from behind. On top of all that, the game has changed from where it was back in the 80's. Significant technological advancements allow us to track them very well, while our oldest submarines, the 688 class (Los Angeles) are in most regards a step past the Russian's latest, and the Seawolf class subs would eat the entire country and then disappear before our own government even knew what really happened.

Two Russian subs 200 miles off the coast is a peacock move, by an anemic peacock. At this point, you have more to worry about your lawn mower running over your toes than you do the Russians attacking us.
