Hey everyone. I just got a job up in CT and I'm looking at apartments. I got one in West Haven close to the University of New Haven on Fist Avenue. I was wondering what the area is like. Any help?

A little run down but I think the area has character. I used to work right in that area.

I agree, the area is run down but not what I would called dangerous or downright sketchy. The area on the other side of Rt 1 off of Forest Rd is nicer. A lot of areas off of Campbell Ave look worn as well, but again they aren't really bad areas or anything. The worst area (in my opinion and speaking as a past West Haven and New Haven resident) is off of/around Elm Street right where it borders New Haven.

I live in West Haven. However I live in the West Shore area, which is considered the nicer part of West Haven. I looked at a house on Second Ave but didn't want to look at a dilapidated factory across from my front yard. Homes gets nicer as you move away from Campbell Ave towards Woodmont. The condos along the boardwalk (near Jimmie's) seem okay as do the condos on Ocean Ave near Tom and Pat's Pizza.
If I had to do it all again, I would have picked a different area to live, such as Milford or Fairfield.

I live in WH, near the high school. IMO, its preferable to 1st Avenue near UNH. However, 1st Avenue isn't awful, or anything like that. I'm thinking that an apt. near the center would be preferable due to restaurants, pubs, drug store, grocery store within reasonable walking distances.
