I've visited Norwich and it seems pretty run-down.

What cities would folks recommend that are within 15 minutes of Foxwoods?

We are a married couple with no children (and no plans for them). I play poker for a living and would like to be closer to live games.

I prefer a city that is a bit more rural, with less traffic. Probably will do an apartment, not be buying a home.

Ideally the city we settle in should either have reasonable access to groceries and some shopping within the city limits, or be within 30 minutes to a city that has a mall or something along those lines.

Also prefer public sewer and water, not septic and wells if at all possible.

Foxwoods is a pretty rural area so finding a place that close might be a problem. You could start in Groton which has a lot of housing options. Also check Ledyard and Stonington. Montville would be another choice. Jay

Like Jay said, Foxwoods itself is in a pretty rural location so anything within a couple of minutes will be difficult to find especially if you aren't looking to buy, but 15-20 minutes away pretty much opens you up to a large portion of New London County. Again, as Jay said, with what you are looking for I would check out the north/northeastern section of Groton first. That area is more rural than much of the rest of Groton (though not as rural as many of your other options) yet it should still have municipal utilities and rental options.

Ledyard and Stonington are also wonderful choices, and I honestly would have placed them first or you but I believe they both use septic and well systems.

As for shopping and groceries you won't have a problem with that if you stay along the shoreline. There are grocery stores within reasonable distance of pretty much everywhere along the shoreline and for shopping you have quite a few local shops and boutiques in Westerly, Stonington Bourough, Mystic, and New London. The Crystal Mall in Waterford has a lot of typical mall stores, and then the two casinoes have a lot of dining and shopping and all of that is within 25 minutes of each other at worst. Then within an hour you have Hartford, New Haven, and Providence if you want even more options.

I hope you find exactly what you are looking for here. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for all the assistance everyone. Atm we're moving into a place that my buddy owns out in Cromwell. Nice area but 50 miles from Foxwoods and we're trying to plan ahead to live closer in the future.

Look for places in Mystic. Plenty of rentals, many of them charming (1700-1800's) houses with 2 apts. in each one, as well as a few apt. complexes. Mystic is a safe area, no worries, no "bad areas". I live in Mystic, and go to casino fairly often. It's about 15-17 min. door to door. Feels like nothing to drive it. I go the back route which is a long pretty country road. Put the radio on, listen to a few good songs and you're there.

Mystic is a great central location with a picturesque town on the Mystic river (kayaking, sailing). It is conveniently located right off of I95. Most of everything you need is in town ( Super markets: A&P, Mcquades ) CVS, several banks, Hardware store, plenty of nicer restaurants.

If you need a Mall there is one in Waterford, which is a straight zip heading S on I95, approx. 15-20 mins. Includes the usual suspects: BB&B, Macy's, Home depot, Sears, Gap, Old Navy, Victoria's Secrets, etc.) Best Buy & Target on same street.

You have Stonington Borough to the north(4 miles), a charming waterfront enclave with neat little shops, and cobblestone streets surrounded on 3 sides by water. RI beaches (direct ocean) 20 mins away. New London is the nearest largest city 10 mins. away via I95 (ferry to Block Island & Fishers Island). There is a Walmart in Groton, takes me 10 mins. door to door to get there via route 184.

Hope this helps.

I don't know, I think this screams Colchester. All the things you need day to day (Stop and shop, Walgreens etc) about 15-20 to the Casinos and 20-30 up to the Hartford area for malls etc.

Thanks for the great advice everyone. We'll have to spend some time scouting out Mystic, Colchester, Stonington/N.Stonington and see where we'd like to settle for a bit in the future.
