I would guess that it's and LCD. I think the smallest plasma is 40". I bought HDMI cables for my 32" Panasonic LCD HDTV. I don't use it for gaming and I rarely watch DVDs. I have Comcast digital cable and a HD DVR. I use HDMI cables between my DVR & my TV.

Here is a link to some FAQs from Direct TV. I would say to read numbers 25, 26, 29 & 30 to help you decide what's best for you. If you're still not sure, speak to the Direct TV people and tell them specifically what components you'll be connecting (i.e. HD Direct TV Receiver, PS3, Sony HD LCD TV, etc.) and have them guide you.

check out the consumer reports for this month. the cover article is about the tv's. It is perfect timing for you. they talk of the differences between lcd and plasma and rank the various brands based on how much definition they have. it was pretty informative.

I haven't watched television in five years, but I still had my tv for awhile because I used to still watch DVDs. When I haven't watched one of those in six months, I sold the TV altogether.

But, I do know a good TV when I see one because I researched them WELL for six months. I recommend LCD over Plasma and I highly, highly, highly recommend the Sony Bravia 40". Best TV, hands down. Viewing angle of 178 degrees (truly) and you don't have to be right in front of the TV to use the remote. I was all over the house using it! Yes, they're a bit pricier than others, but very worth it.

The person (a niece and her husband of one of my coworkers) bought it and they STILL call me to tell me how much they can't get over the picture and how much they love it. They have two other flat screen tvs in the house, too.

After doing tons of research we purchased a Sharp Aquios 52 in. LCD. We have a very sunny family room so a plasma wouldn't work as well. We have had it about 8 months and couldn't be more pleased. We purchased it through a online company. Very good price and great experience as well.

Simple Living: Samsungs all have far better viewing angles than that. Their 40-inch LCD has a 178 degree viewing angle and its far cheaper than Sony.

Top 3 brands for Plasma TV are Panasonic, Sony and Samsung. Sony makes Samsungs Plasma TV monitor. Plasma can be seen 100% in from any direction in any light condition.

I recently purchased the Panasonic 50 inch 1080P Plasma 50Z which is excellent for picture quality.

The biggest thing for me for Plasma is that the refresh rate is 1-2 ms (compared to LCDs 4 ms), wider viewing angle, and, for my model, a 100k hour 1/2 life (for 'durability).

One thing to note, if you buy at Costco you generally get a 2 year warranty (which is 1 year more than normal) and 90 day return policy and I think 90 day tech support number. The price tends to be good too.

For HDMI cables, I got some at monoprice.com and they worked fine.

Also, I like Viewsonic for a good brand with a reasonable price (they've been making computer monitors for over 20 years), though I think the panels are LG. I'm sure other brands look good too, maybe a little more expensive though.
