what's proper, to just give it away? would asking for a few bucks for it be in poor taste?

Only you can make that decision.
I'm in no position to judge what would be "poor taste" in this situation. But I
will say this....chances are no one will buy it, even for a few bucks. You never know, but if the DVD player doesn't work, then it's more likely that someone will pass on it and put the money toward a new HDTV for themselves. And besides...with the mandated digital switch-over we've all done, does the TV even get a signal without being hooked up to cable?
See if anyone is having a yard sale, and ask if you can put it out there. If someone wants it, cool. If not, take it to Goodwill. Maybe someone could use it as a spare for hooking up their video game system.

Did you get instructions with the cable remote? If so, see if there is a way to auto-program it. That's what I had to do with mine. It automatically detects the code for your cable box and TV for you, saving you the frustration of hunting down the right code number. The thing is, it usually involves some convoluted set of steps in which you have to press 2 buttons at the same time to activate the auto-programming mode, and then hitting the power button until the device turns off. Then you press another button to lock the code. Look on your cable remote....find out which kind it is - the specific brand and model number. You could probably go to your cable company's website to locate instructions on how to auto-program it.

Curious...where do you live? I was thinking about this earlier, and I thought "Heck, I could just go over there and set it up for him."
