power on/standby mode as well? when i turn off the cable box it doesn't actually shut off the power on the vizio--i have to shut the power off with the vizio remote or the side button in order for the orange vizio light (power off) to come on, otherwise the vizio light is white tho the screen looks blank(technically on)

but this is petty stuff that i can tackle later on

i conquered the big stuff

and dave and aquila, you saved me from having to read those confusing instructions i don't know what was worse the set up pages or the manual itself

i knew what they were saying but it's so technical still

i just connected the hdmi and power cord and that was pretty much it thanks to u guys

out of curiosity how old are u guys? i always expect this kind of help from older people, not from those in their 20's but i could be wrong

Default dave

should i try another code for vizio? An updated list by my cable company lists vizio as 004 or 031. i used 627 according to the vizio manual. maybe another code would help control volume and on/off?

what's proper, to just give it away? would asking for a few bucks for it be in poor taste?
Only you can make that decision. I'm in no position to judge what would be "poor taste" in this situation. But I will say this....chances are no one will buy it, even for a few bucks. You never know, but if the DVD player doesn't work, then it's more likely that someone will pass on it and put the money toward a new HDTV for themselves. And besides...with the mandated digital switch-over we've all done, does the TV even get a signal without being hooked up to cable?

See if anyone is having a yard sale, and ask if you can put it out there. If someone wants it, cool. If not, take it to Goodwill. Maybe someone could use it as a spare for hooking up their video game system.

Did you get instructions with the cable remote? If so, see if there is a way to auto-program it. That's what I had to do with mine. It automatically detects the code for your cable box and TV for you, saving you the frustration of hunting down the right code number. The thing is, it usually involves some convoluted set of steps in which you have to press 2 buttons at the same time to activate the auto-programming mode, and then hitting the power button until the device turns off. Then you press another button to lock the code. Look on your cable remote....find out which kind it is - the specific brand and model number. You could probably go to your cable company's website to locate instructions on how to auto-program it.

Curious...where do you live? I was thinking about this earlier, and I thought "Heck, I could just go over there and set it up for him."
