Hopefully not experiencing the supply chain problems as the one recently opened in Crossville. The building went up with speed, but it took a long time to get all the necessary fixtures for the kitchen.

Several posts about the virtues or vices of zoning have been removed since they were questions not unique to Cookeville. To continue discussing the pros and cons of zoning, please go to the Urban Planning forum:

Let's get this thread back on topic, please.

Wow saw another car crash off rt 135 today by the CVS. Looks like a woman somehow crossed the middle lane and 2 oncoming lanes of traffic to ride partway up onto a parking lot. Must be scary. Just a week ago I saw a major crash there. Part of the road was apparently shut down for hours. Seems like a dangerous road. What do people feel about that stretch of road? Does Cookeville have an plans of making it like a divided road or anything like that in the future?

The Cookeville Police Department finally has a home of its own, and it's a beautiful facility. They had their grand opening earlier this week. It's at the corner of Old Walton Road and Neal Street across the street from Vol State Community College.

The other one is 17.4 acres.

The city council discussed funding the new aquatics park at Monday night's work session and I guess will discuss it officially at tomorrow night's city council meeting. City Manager James Mills said the city has plenty of debt capacity to build some kind of water park. From start to finish, it would take about 3 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is put somewhere along Tennessee Ave near the new fairgrounds.

The city council voted to approve funds to go ahead and get started on the aquatics park. Apparently, they still don't have a site for it.

A couple of travel centers/truck stops are coming to Tennessee Ave (Exit 283 on I-40). There's a sign up on a 12-acre site bordered by Tennessee Ave, Academy Road, and I-40 for "McGugin's Travel Center" although I don't know if it'll take up the entire 12 acres. If so, I imagine it'll be more like a traditional truck stop and not just a travel center.

Site of the McGugin's Travel Center:

And on the NW corner of the exit, Mapco has purchased 5 acres for a travel center.

Highlands Residential Service, the public housing authority that manages public housing in Cookeville and surrounding communities, has voted to accept a $3 million offer from a developer to buy the Claude Darwin housing project. Don't know where that is? It's 11.5 acres along Walnut Ave just south of Parkview Elementary School, park, ballfields, and skate park. Interestingly, the developer will keep the existing 58 housing units but plans to renovate them and add a 2nd floor to each. I don't know if that means the number of housing units will double, or if they'll just be larger than the current ones.

This is a great location, just up the road from the current fairgrounds and Publix. And the $3 million that HRS will receive will go a long way towards building brand new public housing at its Hickory Valley development by Cane Creek Park, behind the new Oak Tree Towers senior housing facility it recently completed on Buffalo Valley Road.

I don't know how many car washes this town needs, but two more are coming. Nashville-based Wash N Roll is going to build a second Cookeville location, this one on Willow next to Bojangles. And Tidal Wave Auto Spa has just purchased the empty lot on Jefferson in front of the entrance to Walmart. Thomaston, Georgia-based Tidal Wave has locations throughout the Southeast and Midwest but doesn't currently have any other locations in Tennessee although they're expanding quickly. No idea when either one will get started.

They've popped up all over Chattanooga in recent years. Four new ones opened on East Brainerd Rd. alone.
