I don't find this news surprising but it will keep things unsettled in that part of the world.

There is an interim president that will be sworn in tomorrow until new elections can be arranged.

What happened in Egypt is actually not all that uncommon. In many Third World countries there is absence of the institutions that make for a real democracy. I would count among those institutions:

1. A relatively responsible and free press or media;

2. An independent and courageous judiciary that is not afraid to step on toes when public officials violate laws or the constitution.

3. An electorate that is generally literate and takes voting very seriously.

When countries lack these institutions, a democratic government can be a difficult goal. Sometimes, these countries do have other institutions which are useful though. The military--in some countries--is a reasonably reliable organization for accomplishing disaster relief and preventing a general breakdown of law and order.

I am a great believer in the idea that people should rule themselves. However, I also can accept the notion that sometimes--in some places in the world--a government simply fails. If a government is only concerned about the percentage of people in the nation that elected it that government is not likely to do much of a job. In the case of President Morsi, Egypt has been teetering on edge of disaster for his entire one year tenure in office and things were getting worse instead of better. Egypt's small economy was deteriorating. Tourism was drying up as a source of revenue because of instability. Morsi was taking rights away from minority groups and women.

I think Morsi being thrown out of office is going to be a win/win situation for the Egyptian people and other countries as well.
