CATO didn't make up those charts. Those charts are from SS and BLS..YOUR GOVERNMENT.

Unscrupulous physicians and lawyers are the ones ensuring that these new additions are getting onto the doles en masse -- and they're profiting from it in the process. What seems strange to me is that nobody wants to talk about that side of the coin. Fraud perpetrated by healthcare workers is one of the largest sources of wasteful spending in this nation and yet most are given a free pass. Ever wonder why that is?

Less than 40% of applicants nationwide are ever granted benefits. It's a little hard to believe your unsubstantiated claim about "new additions are getting onto the doles en masse"
I think more of the elderly than the disabled. My Mom worked her entire adult life and is supposed to live on $1100 and change a month SS + a $400 monthly pension. Jobs for women in the 60's and 70's didn't pay much, so her SS isn't much as it is.
No, she's not supposed to live on it. She's supposed to have her own savings, too.
Holy cow, it is not possible to tax workers enough to provide a middle class lifestyle for all retired workers.
I get SSI. $733/month. I have hard enough time trying to find a place to live with that. If they slash it I will basically be homeless for the rest of my life. I figured it'll be about $594/month I'd be getting. No landlord would ever rent to me again, ever. Nothing I can do about it.
Have you ever discussed in more detail how you manage? On the retirement or frugal living forums perhaps? I would love to read more.
