For most of us we'll try to avoid the ducks if on a secondary or residential road with virtually no traffic, on a 3 lane high speed expressway i'll be running over the ducks unless traffic is such that i can change lanes to avoid them.
Whoa... what's the deal with Canadians? That's the second duckling-related motorcycle accident resulting in a 10-year driving ban story in this thread...
I used to get a kick out of a sign on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn that read "Wildlife Crossing". Like I'm going to have a chance to stop while doing the speed limit with guys up my butt and others doing 80 on my sides.
Ditt for signs for "Low Flying Aircraft". The heck am I supposed to do?
In a situation like that, I am pretty sure your instinct takes over. Not as in, oh, I don't want to kill the ducklings, but rather, shoot, I ain't gonna hit the ducks and destroy my Tesla Model S, just think how much my insurance would go up, and how I'd be late to the Miami Heat game? Human brain is amazing, it could think all that while swerving in a split second.
On the highway you need to be looking several cars in front of you (and even around tall vehicles). If you see cars hitting their brake lights, you better be slowing down already. If people properly braked like this then everyone behind would be slowing and not jamming on their brakes causing a much more dangerous situation. Of course that's only in an ideal world with defensive drivers. You can be a spirited driver and still be defensive when the situations arise. *sigh*
as much as I would hate to hit a family of ducks, or any poor critter crossing the road for that matter, I would like to think that in the split second I had to make a decision I would flash back to my learning-to-drive days and hear my old man telling me to grit my teeth and prepare for the bump-bump if that's what it took to avoid a much more tragic accident.
