Not sure why it took them so long to test for it. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is endemic to Oklahoma and usually comes with a telltale rash as one of the first symptoms. The disease can easily be fatal if it appropriate treatment doesn't start within 4 or 5 days of the onset of symptoms.
What happened to this woman is horrible but she easily could be dead right now.
Ticks scare the poop out of me. They're so tiny and insidious, and are a real issue here in New England! I do the intense check every time I come back in from anywhere off of a path. Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are no joke.
A guy I used to know in special forces said they wear panty hose sometimes in the bush/jungle to prevent ticks because it is no joke.
Actually, this is a great idea.....hadn't thought about this. I think ticks are really bad this year. We are seeing them in my area and we usually don't have them.
I feel sorry for this woman. I think I'd almost rather not live through it, if one is left with no limbs and the after effects of Lyme Disease.
Lyme/RMSF is no joke. You see a bulls eye you get doxycycline within 2 weeks and good.
That works with Lyme, there is no bulls eye rash with RMSF. With RMSF it basically looks like a million little red dots erupting in a bright rash across the skin and with RMSF, you really need to get treatment within a week if not sooner for optimal recovery.
In some cases of RMSF, by the time the petechial(pinpoint) rash sets in, you could already be past the point of needing to have started treatment.
Typical Lyme disease associated "bullseye" rash.
RMSF associated rash
Not every infection presents a rash either, if you've been in the great outdoors in an area that is endemic for tickborne diseases such as Lyme, RMSF, STARI and others and you start feeling crappy a few days later, I would go to a doctor ASAP and let it be known where you've been the past few days, right off the top.
