I'm pretty sure the courts go by law when deciding cases not the dollars associated with it

That's not the claim being made, try again, but try hard this time. Regardless, why would they be forced to honor $43M when no one even won $43M? Did you even attempt to read the story about this?

On the surface yes but in courts there's a lot of other things going on, not the least of which is pragmatism.
