This.
Hollow points are not illegal, even in Ca. They are the preferred self defense round and are more desirable in that they are less likely to pass through the target and hit someone else.
I don't understand why cops are more ignorant of gun laws than the public. It should be the opposite.
Somehow, when I read the title of the thread I pictured the man and the cache behind a bar in the alley, taking a whiz against the building. What exactly a cache would look like would be up to the illustrator. I frequently imagine in cartoon.

Yes. The hollowpoint comments were just more anti gun, fear mongering, hype. Everything he had in his bag (minus the machete and he was CARRYING it illegally for CA) is illegal in CA. The hollow points are not though, and the cops use hollow points themselves. AR's, AKs, FN' all semi autos with a detachable magazine have been banned in CA for a long time. People who had them were supposed to turn them in. Very few did. Get caught with just an AR magazine in CA you're going to get arrested.
At this point they can't hold him on any more than possession of banned weapons. Banned in CA anyway, and a couple other states. Was he up to no good? Possibly. Kinda looks bad. But in terms of actual crimes they really don't have that much on him in the big picture. But it gave the media a stump to jump with hype, misinformation and tossing around terms that they are clueless as to the meaning of.
The guys in trouble, most certainly. CAs firearms laws are very strict and he violated some of their more strict examples. Just the magazines for the guns alone are a crime in CA.

You couldn't see the magazines well enough in the photos to know, but in California many people have "blocked" magazines- a 30-round magazine body with a stick or even just a pop-rivet in the correct place so it'll only hold ten rounds. Perfectly legal.
Judging by the finish of the items in the duffel bag (worn off) he's been carrying them around for a very long time without shooting anyone. Definitely self-important and histrionic law enforcement, not a "prevented" crime.

The gun itself is still illegal. Nevertheless, you are correct and as I said they really don't have squat on this guy. Indeed hardly a prevented act of violence. Unless divination of intent counts as hard evidence in a court of law, which last time I checked it doesn't. Even in CA. Were the news to actually follow up on this, which they won't, what actually happens with this would not fit their narrative.
At this point the pictures of the weapons can be flashed and sensationalized and the story pumped up. But we won't hear any more about this. Because it's really not such a big deal in reality.
