That's dangerous that the seats can just flip like that. Were they not locked into place properly, or is that just how the van was designed?
That is one question want answered as well; but cannot research more now as the story has hit me hard. Reading that the teen called 911 back to say he didn't have much time left and that he loved his mother got me. Being suffocated is one of the most horrible ways to die, especially aware of the fact. That poor sweet innocent....

Heartbreaking. His poor parents. My heart goes out to them.
My suspicion is that he leaned over the folding seats in such a way that he became pinned, and the weight of his own body prevented him from pulling the seat off of himself.
(Not saying it's his "fault" ... I don't think there is fault in this case. It's a terrible accident of mechanics and physics. )

I do thank the person that shared the link that shows exactly how this could happen; I was unable to picture it in my mind but now it makes sense.
How come his mother was able to find him using the location of his cell phone but no one else was?
Sorry the kid died.......but why not just open the rear hatch to get the tennis gear instead of hopping seats? If the hatch was broken then why put the gear back there to begin with?
I am unfamiliar with Honda minivans, isn't there a release latch in the back of the van to open the rear hatch? So you get pinned, no way to pop the hatch and roll out onto the ground?

Many parents have find my kid apps installed as way to track their kids when they start driving. It goes with the privilege of driving especially when they are 16-17.

Ugh. Poor mother too.
That's a question that will probably be answered later.
It's likely because she knew exactly what van she was looking for; the officer may not have had as good coordinates on where the cell phone was, and also, he wouldn't know the appearance of the van he was looking for.
