holy cow. dynamite just left lying around in the basement by previous residents?
Quote:
Officials say the family's Lindley Street home lost power as a result of thunderstorms Thursday night, and after a trip to a closed Home Depot to purchase emergency lighting, the family remembered what they believed to be candles left in the basement of the home by the previous residents.
The victim, who is approximately 30 years old and a married mother of two, attempted to light one of the "candles." Instead, it was a quarter stick of dynamite. She suffered severe injuries to one of her hands, including the potential loss of several fingers. She also suffered serious injuries to her face. https://abc7ny.com/woman-blows-off-f...andle/4172986/
That's exactly what I thought. I just googled "quarter stick of dynamite" to confirm what it looks like and also watched a few demonstrations on youtube. Nope, I don't care how dark it was I wouldn't have mistaken that for a candle by touching and holding it.

Reason: confirm
Even in the dark, I would think the first clue might be that fuse cord burns much differently than a candle wick (spitting sparks & fire instead of a bright flame). I don't quite understand how anyone could make that mistake. My sympathies for the woman that was injured, but she's probably lucky to be alive.

first... and last clue. by that point those types of fuses are just about impossible to extinguish, unless you have a scissors handy to snip off the burning part.
