But you have to have an account to use the library computers. That means they would have your I.D. unless you're using a fake I.D. to set up the library account.

No, actually, you don't have to have in account in many libraries. They give you as many guest passes as you want. They don't turn the public away or pressure visitors to get a library card. At least--in the libraries I've used in several states as a temporary visitor.

Interesting. I've always had to give them my DL, even in temp situations, like in Las Vegas, NM. Where I live now, you have to have a library card.

I'd have to check, but I think my settings are configured to delete history and cookies when I close out of Chrome. Anyway, I do it periodically through the day anyway to keep youtube and Facebook from pestering me with ads related to something I had surfed.

I have trouble accessing some sites anyway because I'm very stingy about the cookies I allow to be set. I like to read and comment on the Slate site, but since they expect you to allow all their cookies, I don't bother.

Like can they unlock/dig up your search history to see if you've...

-Sold illegal drugs
-Did illegal drugs
-Did something at work that is illegal but not a felony
-Admitted driving drunk
-Unfaithful/infidelity
-Have pets in a non-pets allowed residence
-Looked for another job while employed
-Posted on CD Forum that your wife/husband is intolerable and you can't take it anymore and want out??

Like ... how far does it go?

If you're really dumb enough not to delete your search history, then you get what you deserve. But ... having access to everything I've ever searched and every website I've ever been to?

Uh, yea, there's some shady stuff. Lol

I personally don't think they can do that.

They can't tell if you DID those things from your search history. But, your search history may act as corroborating evidence.

Search history proves nothing.

but.. If you're in front of a jury for murdering your S.O. and they were killed by falling off a horse and your last search was "How to make a fall look like an accident".. That's.. Not gonna look good.

And, again, deleting your search history is the least of it. Google stores all that and just requires a subpeona to turn it over.

Google is tracking the location of your cellphone most of the time as well, if you're android. So.. If you're gonna murder someone, strap your phone to your dog for a while.

Won't work much longer. ChatGPT 2.0 can handle dog barks.

It does not matter because Google's servers keep a copy regardless, and Google has been subpoena'ed before to deliver a user's search history, or identify a user who made a specific search.

In reality, this may be more problematic.
If your user is not logged they will identity you with your IP. If you used a VPN they'll subpoena the VPN company. If you use Starbucks wifi they'll check the router's db for the MAC address associated with the destination IP and cross reference by time and date.

You would have to use a virtual machine (booting Linux on USB is not enough) and use Tor on top of that to make it really difficult for the IT forensics team.

Well funny, I’m really not worried about anyone looking at my Google search history because basically I haven’t killed anyone and I don’t plan to. Lol I mean I can see how it would play in as additional evidence if you were suspected of a crime like that. But not just searching of itself alone. I mean I search and research and read about all kinds of random weird or unusual things that might pop into my brain that I get curious about. It doesn’t mean I’m out doing them.

Well, it looks like another search history comes back to potentially bite an alleged serial killer.

Gilgo Beach murders: Suspect Rex Heuermann searched Google for explicit pornography, case-related queries

Quote:
Officials detailed in a bail application that Heuermann made "thousands" of Google searches for various explicit pornography and also searched for nearby sex workers. Fox News Digital is not describing many of the Google searches due to their explicit nature.

Among the Google searches that Heuermann allegedly made are "mistress long island" and "mature escorts Manhattan."

Many of the Google searches allegedly involved child pornography.

Law enforcement officials obtained the Google search history through a warrant on a "junk" and "burner" email account.

Between March 2022 and June 2023, according to the bail application, the suspect allegedly made over 200 Google searches related to the disappearances and murders of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Barthelemy, Waterman, and Costello.
