Authorities are investigating the death of a woman who was found dead Saturday on a hiking trail outside Yellowstone National Park in an apparent bear encounter.
She was an employee; apparently, the bear had at least one cub nearby.
It seems the woman was jogging when she was attacked. This is one of the worst things you can do during cub season in bear country. If you are running toward the bear or its cub, the animal may interpret it as charging behavior and go into defense mode, and if you are running away, it may trigger the bear's prey drive. I wonder if they have any sort of bear/wildlife safety orientation for employees of the park.
Be aware, have a dog (early warning system) with you if you can, carry bear spray and the largest caliber that you can handle. I can't imagine that death by grizzly-mauling has any pleasant aspects to it.

Now they are looking for the bear; probably so they can kill it.
I don't think that will happen. Bear traps in the area are coming up empty, and they haven't been able to locate the bear with a helicopter search. Also they have already ruled her death an accident and they do not believe the bear was being predatory. I suspect they just want to make sure the bear has left the area. The emergency closure order for the forest is scheduled to expire on the 25th, if they don't extend it. That is an indication they don't think there is a continuing threat.

Following an investigation, officials say the bear attack did not appear to be predatory. Amie's cause of death was determined to be exsanguination due to an accidental bear mauling.
Definitely move away, if you see bear cubs nearby in the wilderness. Wear bear bells, or have another noise maker as you are moving. If noise is heard nearby, bears tend to go in the opposite direction. Do not run if you see a bear. Bears do sense panic, so stay calm in any situation.
