Ignorantia juris non excusat ... Ignorance of the law excuses not
I agree with you that if someone is going to operate a drone, they need to make it a point to familiarize themselves with the applicable laws, particularly with regard to where they are NOT allowed to be flown. Seems to me that googling a list of places where they are prohibited should be fairly easy.
Actually the bulk of the charges (up to 3 years) is because he was "knowingly operating an unregistered drone". It's just one year he faces for flying it in restricted air space.
A stiff fine is appropriate, maybe a few thousand dollars. A prison sentence is not.
I'm amused by the self-righteous attitudes from some of the people in this thread. I'm sure they've never messed up in their lives.
Most people have not messed up to the point of halting an NFL game. . But you should probably google the legalities of flying a drone over an NFL playoff game before you do it. That is just basic stuff. If he gets sent to prison. So be it. Who cares.
It was the "administrative timeout" at the AFC Championship. 44 year old dude flew a drone over the Baltimore football stadium while the game was going on.
Four years is too much, but we don't want people doing this kind of thing, and he needs a punishment that will deter him and others in the future..
