If kids transfer from East Coast to TX - how do they make up the days? Our schools start in Sept. (moving)

I know parts of the country, TX included, goes from August to May. In NJ we run from Sept. after Labor Day until the end of June. If we were to make the move some day, I'm just wondering how that works. Our laws say the kids are in for 180 days but they would fall short if they transferred mid-year. I'm sure we're not the only ones and there is nothing in the works for us yet but I was just thinking of that today...

You would just finish the school year in Texas. You wouldn't "make up" any days lost by starting later on the East Coast. You may need a tutor though if your kids are significantly behind the material due to starting later and missing 4 weeks or so of class (more likely in upper grades).

What TC80 said, except that since the TX legislature banned super-early starts a few years back, your kids would only be about 2 weeks behind, not a whole month. Probably not a huge deal, relative to the overall upheaval of a mid-year move.

Moving mid-year certainly wouldn't be our first choice but I'd be foolish to think that this could always be avoided. As much as they like school, they'd probably be psyched that they'd be getting out earlier! They know we've been toying with the idea of relocating for awhile and it all depends upon DH getting a job first. They're in 4th and 5th grade now so I hope the transition would go smoothly if need be.
