Speed limit in my neighborhood is 25, and you can barely crack that safely. Perhaps it is in this case as well.

The presumptive speed limit on residential streets is 30, but with the Sierra Club approved narrow streets with notches, plus street parked cars, it is not safe to do 30, so I am normally doing 20 to 25 in my neighborhood or adjacent ones.

I will go even slower when cars are parked directly across the street from each other.

There is no posted speed limit in my neighborhood. Under Texas law the limit would technically be 30mph, but it's either not possible to go that fast (unless you're accelerating hard) due to all the stop signs & turns or I have to slow down or even stop due to cars being parked in the street and pedestrians crossing anywhere they please. (I don't beep at them.)

Additionally, there are usually children outside playing when I get home from work and they've been known to zip into the street on their bicycles/scooters or go chasing after a ball. It happens. I'd rather not ruin everyone's day by hitting them with my car.

Coming to a full and complete stop at a stop sign is required by law. Police around here love to patrol Belt Line and after they've snagged someone, they cut through my neighborhood to get back out into their hiding spot to snag another. They have been known to give tickets to people who do not come to a full stop at stop signs. This happens in the morning and late afternoon into early evening. I don't want to get a ticket and I don't care if me stopping at stop signs inconveniences you (or anyone else). If the Yoga Pants Patrol doesn't like it, maybe they can petition the city to have those "Stop" signs changed to "Yield" signs or have no signs at all. They're not going to, though...because children.

Lastly, I find it amusing that you think I do it to "control traffic." I'm a pretty passive and courteous driver and if someone wants to pass me on the highway so they can go 90mph, go for it. It happens every day and I don't get bent out of shape over it. I drive slowly in my neighborhood for the reasons stated above. I'd drive faster if conditions allowed it...but they don't....so I choose not to be an a-hole.

To recap: The only reasons I drive the way I do through my neighborhood the way I do are as follows.
  • Tickets suck and I don't want one. I already pay the City of Richardson plenty through property taxes.
  • Hitting adults/children/pets with my car would definitely suck. I don't want to do that either. Sucks for everyone involved. I don't know if you've ever known a child who was hit by a car and dragged half a block, but I have. Happened a few streets away when I was a kid. That girl was in the hospital for a month...she nearly died...and last time I saw her, she still had the scars over 30 years later. It was horrifying. Nobody should have to endure that.

Speed limit on residential streets is 30MPH. I think when I started driving, back in the dark ages, it was 20 or 25. I don't think she's trying to prove a point, just being careful. As for people putting signs in the middle of the street, illegal. In my area I see signs on lawns (private property) stating "Drive like your kids live here". I appreciate those signs, a gentle reminder to be cautious.

Thank you! Yes...just being careful.
