UnfairPark and EDS_

Neuroscience major in UTD is competitive (at least from what we are hearing) Their research program gets a lot of funding and is really good. So much so I keep hearing maintaining the 3.8 and above GPA is very hard with a Neuroscience major.

We are not blindly considering UTD just because of the full ride. We are taking into consideration all other aspects as well.

Here you go, parents of pre-med students may find this helpful.

https://www.aamc.org/data/facts/appl...tstablea2.html

Texas Statistics

Number of students sent to medical schools

UT -747
TAMU-434
UTD- 317
Baylor-293
UT Houston-226
Rice-206

Total student enrollment

UT- 52,000
TAMU-70,000
UTD-30, 000
Baylor-17,000
UT Houston-49,000
Rice- 6000

Now you do the math for which colleges send the highest percentage.)

Hmmm, first you need to subtract the number of graduate students from the total enrollments above.
Second, something like 20% of all undergrads at Rice are "premeds" vs. 2% at University of Houston. The others are in between.

Almost all of these schools have similar percentage of students on pre-med track.

I don't think that's the case at all.

Unless the majority gives up earlier, which is not the case.

I don’t know if there is any data out there but you can always go ask sophomores and juniors at every college to find out how many find other passions and how many get weeded out.

Sorry, I have no reason to do that.

Neither do I so it’s logical to go with the overall enrollment statistics. We’ll also have to take it in account that schools like UT and Rice are very selective and have very few merit scholarships while UTD, UH, Baylor and TAMU are less selective and give out lots of merit scholarships so it’s not necessarily them helping applicants get into medical schools but middle class applicants picking them for money and getting into medical schools due to their own hard work, which gives an average applicant no advantage.

My only point is to pick a college where your child fits best and keep in mind that most students change their paths as they grow and learn their true passions and real strengths. There is more to education than medical school entrance ticket. If they are truly passionate about medicine, they’ll find a way to get there. Don’t go bankrupt but don’t automatically go with the free option (unless you don’t have a financial choice) and like other things in life, look for what works best for your individual child. If it’s free college, you are fortunate. If another one, you are still fortunate to have the opportunity to choose.

That's true...just don't let them pick one of these new $50k/year DO schools or TCU's new MD school!!! We've met more than one "make it happen at all costs" type person on this road. The fact that your son is getting a full ride to UTD makes me think he wont have an issue. It isn't pretty when it doesn't work out, though.
