^ I don't think all those opposed to low-income housing are racists... I think what most people fear is crime, as low-income housing tends to bring with it more crime to an area (I saw this happen where I live in North Dallas).

I like the diversity that low-income housing brings in, but I wish the process were more selective so as to only bring in folks who don't have a criminal past. I have no problem with low-income units around me as long as the people there are respectful and law-abiding.

For the Far north burbs Mckinney has a lot of section 8.

Frisco made a decision not to allow section 8.

So you will also have a good amount of section 8 housing options north of 121.

Currently there are no section 8 units vacant in McKinney. I know, I called for a relative. I then contacted the TDHCA in Austin, the people that run section 8. They said it is closed for now due to no funding. There is public housing thru the local housing authority, but there is a huge waiting list. There are some low/mod income units around Carrollton and Plano. You just have to know where they are. There are a few complexes in McKinney, but it is NOT section 8. Again, it is called low/mod income housing. You can check with your local housing authority. Start by calling city hall and let them direct you to the housing authority.
Good luck.

...seriously now....you think government should help people live in $150k+ houses? Thats just a blatant waste of money! I believe if the government is helping you out then you should live as modest and frugal as you possibly can. Including the size and cost of the house you live in. Abuse of welfare and other government programs is part of the reason our governemnt is going bankrupt.

Have you checked Craigslist yet? I had no problem finding single family housing in a variety of zip codes, including 2 in Plano (W of I75 no less), 3 in Lewisville and several in N. Dallas. All accepted or "welcomed" Section 8. I have no idea if these houses are in $150,000+ neighborhoods, but based on the photos I saw, and based on the zips, I wouldn't call the areas shabby.

There are also some links on some of the listings for agencies that appear to specialize in placing Section 8 in 2, 3, and 4 bedroom homes all around the metroplex. Other listings appeared to be just private owners. Don't really know how that works, but Craigslist should provide many leads.

I think it just depends on the landlord if they want to accept Section 8 vouchers or not. We have a Section 8 house on our street - houses run around $200,000. The homeowner is an original owner of the house and said it was the best way to be a landlord. It was a regular rent check, he said. Predictable, compared to having regular non-regulated tenents. He has to meet higher standards though. Seems like the family in that house changes every year.

Anyone can be succumbed to Section 8. You could have been a wealthy house wife with children who never had to work cause your husband took care of you and the kids; and then became a divorced mother who had to rely on section 8 to make ends meet. Does this make you a bad person, or low-class, or unworthy to live in a decent, safe environment to raise your children? Everyone who is on section 8 is not a criminal or "low class".
