After arriving into town, someone told us that Hwy 121 is now a Tollway. Are there booths along the way to pay money or do we HAVE to get a toll tag? I haven't driven on it yet.

Sunday morning would be the best time, imo.
As for the tolling, you will be charged by mail if you don't have a Tolltag. Here's the rates:

A lot of confusion has resulted from out-of-towners driving rental cars on our toll roads, not realizing that the charges were being sent to the rental companies, then to a collection agency who charged unGodly service fees. By the time the bill got back to the driver, it was hundreds of dollars - and they never even knew they were on a toll road.

No toll booths on 121. It's best to get a tolltag. Dallas North tollway has no booths either down near downtown where it starts. If you sell your car, be sure and take the tolltag off and notify the tollway authority, right away. Make sure the car title gets switched over, too.

Yes 121 is a tollway in that area, but not in all areas. You will definitely want to get a Toll Tag as it is much easier. There is the 121 tollway and there is also the dallas north Tollway as well.
As far as a good time to learn the roads, I agree that Sunday morning would be good.

As others have said, there are no toll booths on 121, even though it is a toll road. The NTTA has 121 using the new tag/video toll plazas - if you have a tolltag, it will scan that, if not, the video system will photograph your license plate and bill you at your car's registered address.
The advantage to having a tolltag is in reduced toll costs - there is a discount for using the tag. If you look at the chart, there is a price for "Zip Cash Video Toll" and a price for "T" (tolltag) - the tolltag price is always lower:

The new toll system (ZipCash) is a complete ripoff. BEWARE. I just had to pay nearly 300 in fines. My total toll charges were less than 15.00 but then they add 25.00 "administration" charge for each toll. There is nothing you can do about it. You just have to pay whatever they invoice you for. It's corrupt. It's criminal. Why isn't anyone reporting this on the news. How can they get away with this type of organized crime? Beware!

That's only if you drive through a toll tag-only lane at a toll plaza that has cash booths.

I don't think you HAVE TO take the tollway if you are just on 121. The tollway starts after Denton Tap, it becomes the SRT.
