I am curious as to whether or not m-i-l apartments or suites are available in houses in Plano, Flower Mound, etc. They are quite common in Utah and I am afraid my viewpoint is affected by that - I think they are available everywhere. Maybe not so true?

I ask b/c my health has taken a bad turn and it might be easier to live with my son and family, but not right on top of them! TIA.

Very high in demand but not common at all. This is where the floorplan that has the master bedroom PLUS a second bedroom PLUS another full bath on the first floor very popular and easy to sell.

I participate in builder's focus groups and this is always at the top of the requests.

There are some great floor plans in manufactured houses that have two master suites on opposite ends of the home. I know of one family that took one of those floor plans to an architect and had a stickbuilt house built from them.

Guest houses, Carriage houses, Servant's quarters, etc. are common in my part of town - East Dallas area - also there are a lot of duplexes which would work for this.

I have heard of folks in some of the suburbs turning attached garages into M-I-L suites but of course that would depend on the building codes.

Problem is my son's work location is in west Plano and we like the Plano ISD. I may have to move to a lower altitude ASAP due to lung issues - 4,500 ft is hard on me! Of course, that means selling quickly (or dumping it, as I like to say). Just hope I can clear enough to get a decent house there!

Guest houses/servants quarters are also very common in University Park/Highland Park as well.

The builder who built my home (Highland Homes) had a floorplan with a mother in law suite. It was the only bedroom on the first floor but it was a nice setup. I thought about it but remembered how quirky my mother in law is so I passed.
