I have lived in Georgia literally my whole life, and am looking to relocate to Dallas. I have taken trips there, so I know what kind of city I am moving to. Thing is, I have no jobs lined up and plan on moving out there anyway. This is something that's been on my mind for the past year. Any pointers on starting from scratch?

Do you have 6 months to a years living expenses saved up?
Do you have any family/friends/connections in Dallas?
Have you found a place to live?
Is this place okay with you not having a job?

Hi whodhu,
Those are some very viable questions. [mod] not allowed, read TOS [/mod] But 1st thing's 1st. what type of arrangements do you have set up?

1) I have found a nice apartment complex along 360.
2) Only connections I have in Dallas are people from a Baptist church in Arlington. I have a handful of friends out there, and no family members.
3) I would be okay living about 6 months to a year without a job.

I plan on using this summer to save up enough money so I can move out there. Worst case scenario, I am planning to take a huge overlimit charge on a credit card so I have enough to support myself for 6 months. Would that be a viable move?

charging up the credit card would be a very "dallas" like move, but hardly viable

actually that sounds like a move anyone would make who has no real plan or skills but lots of despiration -- and not necessarily tied to Dallas or any other state/city...

PLEASE -- don't come to Dallas ...to paraphrase a Dave Loggins' lyric...

Moving in your circumstances sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Refocus your energy on a job or use your credit card for job training. Seriously get some more solid advice from people in your community. Grass is not greener just because you move, your problems/boredom just get a new zip code.

This is a terrible backup plan. Don't move unless you have saved actual cash to support your living expenses. 6-9 months is a good plan. Good luck!

temp agencies in Dallas are hiring if you are not picky about jobs. Check out Kelly's Temps and others and you will find something.

I see. So I should save up actual cash instead of charging straight into Dallas. For the time being nothing has been finalized and I'm trying to get ideas on how to move to a new city. What about the other aspects, such as connections?
